What is lino-type??

It’s what they used to use to print papers around 50 or so years ago if I remember correctly. Saw it used on a tour of the Hamilton Spectator back when a newspaper was something other than a wet napkin.
On a similar but different note you can get actual lino in a brown colour from art stores to carve out a design etc put ink on it and create posters and art work. Similar to lithograph which used stone or wood block like the old Japanese prints.
 

Linotype alloy is a specialized lead-based alloy composed of approximately 84% lead, 12% antimony, and 4% tin, designed for hot-metal typesetting.

When one of the local papers went to a different method of printing paper, they called me and asked if I was interested in the now scrap print blocks. Of course, I said yes, but did not expect they had just over two tons of it, along with molds, melting pots, release agents, cleaners, storage racks, type setting blocks, and even the old press it all fit into to be printed.

I found a home for most of the equipment, but the linotype metal was a flood on the market at the time.

It took a few years, but I melted it all down into 1 pound ingots, and it sold off slowly over the next couple of years to folks who were mostly into casting large quantities of pistol ammunition and one fellow making his own pellets for shot.

I still have about 50 pounds left, doubt I will ever use it up, but there is a young fellow down the road, who seems to be interested in casting his own bullets, so it will likely end up with him.

It's good for adding to pure lead to harden it, and in some bullets, intended for higher velocities, for the 444 Marlin or 45-70, etc, with the right lube or powder coated, it can be driven to higher velocities, with almost no leading.

I had so much of it on hand at one time, that I was not mixing it with lead and casting it as is for the Sharp's Creedmore Rifle, chambered for the 45-70. I usually powder coated the bullets, but Rooster Red worked well too.

I'm going to disagree a little with bearhunter on strictly semantic grounds. Linotype is not an alloy, it is a machine.

The Linotype machine simplified the process of assembling printing letter stamps for printing onto paper (typesetting). The machine came onto the market 140 years ago, and did not come to market with any special alloys for the printing material. Instead, it used the same type metals that had been standard for typesetting for the previous 200 years.

So, what casters today call "linotype" is actually standard eutectic type metal, such as was used for typesetting since the days of Shakespeare. The Mergenthaler Linotype Company never claimed this alloy as their own or made any attempt to associate their own name with it.

I just got 1,300 147 grain .357 linotype I think I’m melting most of them into 2,000FPS rifle bullets.

They will still need to be lubricated, or they will leave very hard to remove Lino alloy in the bore. Powder coating will allow you to get several hundred more fps out of those bullets.
