I was wondering what sort of liscences/certificates are needed to legally hunt in Alberta. It has always been my understanding that I would need a WIN card and to write a hunter education test before being allowed to buy tags. However my friend said that all you need is a WIN card and you are good to go. I am an Alberta resident and would be classified as a first time hunter.

1st, you need your WIN card - you need this to buy any tags, etc...

2nd, you need your wildlife certificate. This has to be purchased every year.

3rd, you need to buy your tags for whatever you are planning to hunt unless it isn't required to have a tag to hunt it.

You will need a WIN (Wildlife Identification Number). There is an option on the WIN application that you can check that asks if you have taken a Hunter Education Course in Alberta or another province (most provinces require a Hunter Ed Course for getting a Hunting Licence!). If you do not check that option, then the WIN is only good for aquiring fishing licences. I would suggest getting a Hunter course completed before getting the WIN. WINs only cost $5.00 (I think) and are good for 5 years.

After you have the WIN, it will allow you to purchase the Hunting licence and species tags yearly.

See, you can lie and you may get away with it. The problem is you don't need to provide proof of your hunter safety course.

BUT, some are audited every year and you are toast if you are caught.

That is the crux of it, many do lie and are getting away with it, that is likely what your friend is getting at.

Probably bad mojo if you get caught. I'd play the game by the rules. The course is only a few hours. Can you challenge the exam?

Isn't the course longer than that?? I thought it was more like a 10-12 hr course.

I know minors can't challenge, but adults can.

Regardless, the rules from province to province are probably different enough to go thru the course.

You can self study for the first time hunters test, then contact your local SRD office arrange a time to write the test, and if you pass it your good to go. My Mrs took this approach 15ys. ago, and she nailed it first time out, and she never hunted before or had hunters in her family, and heck we'd only been going out for just over a year.

AHEIA are the people to contact. For giggles you can try and get your wildlife certificate with your WIN but I would recommend you take the course. In Calgary it runs 2.5 days and is well worth it.
