Long time lurker, just never post.
I am looking for some advice on a new .22.
I want semi auto with removeable mag (clip) and is reliable, but best bang for my buck. I have passed on a couple cooey model 64's and was thinking of a mossberg, but was told not to, and just spend the extra couple bucks on a 10-22
what say the crowd?

ruger, they make millions a year, and could make twice as many, they are reliable, somewhat accurate, have lots of magazines available and anyone pretty much knows how to fix or modify them. If you want something a little nicer that will always be a wonderful rifle, buy the CZ semi auto.

Welcome to CGN! I'd suggest you do a search in this forum for topics that cover the Ruger 10/22 vs Marlin 795...there are plenty of them. I had a 10/22, sold it, and won't buy another. I have and use a Marlin 795 that cost me less than 1/2 of what the 10/22 did, and it's WAY more accurate. I'm shopping for another one in stainless.

The Remington 597s are supposed to be very good, I just never cared for the look of them. Can't see myself ever owning a Mossberg anything, but their 702 "Plinkster" has a pretty respectable reputation from what I've read.

Dizzy nailed it

Mossburgs "micro groove rifling" is crap! In fact its 1 step away from being a smooth bore. Add a bit of fouling and that's just what it becomes.
Rugger 10-22 (if you can find one) since Rugger has pre-sold all its guns for the next 3 years

Remington 597 as a second choice

Be carefull with 10/22 builds. Once you start, you just can't stop! Great fun, but can be heavy on the wallet as well. The only thing I would recommend changing that is a must is the stock.(unless your a little kid) jmo.

If you are into the "honduh civic" thing a 10/22 is right up your ally. It is a starting point to build something from. If you want something out of the box that works there are many others. Marlin 60/795, rem 597, cooey/lakefeild 64, cz.

Btw the model 60 is the most sold rimfire not the 10/22

I shoot a custom 1022 with great results for a steep price. Won't feed anything but mini mags! However recently two brothers and a friend bought CZ semi auto's and I got to shoot them. I have to say the trigger is not the best, but! Accuracy out of the box is amazing with cheap bulk ammo. I was very impressed and for the price the CZ gets my vote.

Most of the run-of-the-mill semi's are about equal... Ruger 10/22, Savage 64, Marlin 60/795, Remington 597 etc... Pick one and go shooting.... Or spend a little more on a CZ or Thompson R-55... Or spend more yet and build your own... You can call it the Rusty Model One.

Thanks for the replies folks.
I am going to look at a 10/22 takedown tomorrow!

I just bought the 10/22 takedown. Its pretty nifty! Comes with a cool case, scope rail, and an idiotic lock system. Chuck it in the garbage before it scratches the receiver.

I can't get over how simple the action is and its a blast to shoot. You wont regret it. Just make sure you set the barrel adjustment ring as per the manual before you go shootin.
