What is the best 22LR hunting round (Brand, bullet wt etc) For small game

I like CCI SV. More consistent than the really cheap stuff in my rifles, without breaking the bank like some of the fancier options.

As has been mentioned - whatever shoots well in your rifle.

I use Eley Subsonic Hollow as they shoot very well in my CZ for grouse ranges.

For good knockdown power I really like the CCI Velocitor. 40 grain HP going out at 1400 fps or so. They shoot very precise out of my 10/22
Be careful with body shots though as they can do a lot of damage. I used to pick the heads off grouse out to pretty decent ranges.

It's my go to for hunting small game although I have no doubt they would do a number on a coyote closer in.

I've done most of my small game hunting with a 22lr, shooting exactly one grouse with a shotgun against at least 200 with a 22lr. With the exception of a handful, all my grouse with the 22lr have been killed with round nose ammo. I prefer subsonic/standard velocity stuff, it's just easier on the ears and maybe a touch more accurate in my rifles.

Now if you were just doing pest control (gophers, squirrels, crows, magpies, etc) I'd be doing high velocity HP stuff that shoots reasonable.

I would use what ever shoots best in your rifle. We are talking small game here, grouse, rabbits etc not Cape buffalo where bullet performance is critical. Rabbits and grouse are typically shot at close range and headshots are preferred in which case meat damage will not occur with any bullet used. A decent rimfire rifle with good target ammo will connect on grouse heads all day long if you do your part. If you don’t mind taking body shots stay away from hollow points.

I mainly shoot gophers (Richardson ground squirrel) with my 22. Shoot thousands per year. Winchester hollow point in bulk pack seem to be the best bang for the buck. They perform better than federal bulk HP ammo. Even shot and killed a couple of badgers with them. Head shots.

I’ll throw my hat in the ring here along with others that have already mentioned, shoot what your gun shoots best with.
For me it’s bug holes with Blazer out of the T1X with a sixteen inch barrel at twenty five yards. Opens up a wee bit at fiddy. Then it’s followed by American Eagle solids. When I started hunting all I had was CIL Canucks. Killed a lot of chickens with a Cooey repeater. I digress.
Hollow points I would keep for varmints if I was to use them.

Solids are adequate for bush rabbits and grouse. Copper wash and copper plated bullets aren't "bad" for barrels, but might need more frequent cleaning to prevent copper fouling. If you clean the bore occasionally it's not a big deal.

I loved the accuracy of CCI Velocitors but they became difficult to find. I switched to Remington Yellow Jackets but they became even harder to find. Now I use Remington Thunderbolts and Subsonics as they are available.
