What is the best 22wmr semi auto?

A buddy of mine wants a 22 wmr in semi auto and wants the best one. I suggested the ruger 10/22 magnum but I am not sure if there is better for the price and reliability. It must be a semi and it probably should be 600 dollars or less. Any suggestions are welcome.

I own a 10/22 mag. I searched for one for a VERY long time, when I found one I had to pay ridiculous money. I think the Rem 597 is one of the few decent priced wmr semis available readily...

Thanks guys for your input. He has a 10/22 mag lined up for 399. I think he is going to buy it. Though he does have some interest in the REM 597.

I was thinking of getting a 10/22 mag (before I got my Savage Mk II), but read in several forums that they were problematic. The actions kept breaking IIRC. Have they fixed them?

The early single extractor models are the ones to have. Pull the stock extractor out for an aftermarket one and any extraction problems go away. When ruger switched to the dual extractor they weakend the bolt and I've read about a couple that have blown apart where the second extractor is pinned. It's a pretty common mod to pull the second extractor and fill the bolt face with JB Weld to get some integrity back in that spot.
