I find this forum very interesting and was wondering what everyone thinks is the best longdistance shooting 308 that can be bought at the shop??

How about that Tikka Tactical. Not as good as my Savage bvss but I'm sure you might be able to catch up. L.O.L
 
Savage 10FP. The model that used to be the LE2B (McMillan Stock) is your best bet, with their new HS stocked model not far behind. They're not as cheap as a base model 10FP, but the base stock is really ####e. I haven't seen the HS stock model in Canada yet, but the McMillan is over $1K. Mind you, what would the stock cost if you wanted to upgrade from the factory one?
 
Savage, hands down... For price, performance and customer service/support!!!

I believe that Savage Arms in Lakefield, Ontario does the Customer Support, and I to would have to agree that the Savage 10FP McMillan, new name as per the updated web-site, is bar none the best out of the box rifle for the $$$. Were can you get a heavy barrel rifle with a McMillan A2 stock for that kind of money? That said, the Remington 700P and LTR and also the Winchester M70 Stealth, with the HS stock is nothing to laugh at either, just not the deal of the Savage in the end.
 
The Sako TRG 22 is a out-of-the-box rifle but around $3000. This rifle smokes any of the rifles mentioned in every way but if you are on a budget any of the other Sako rifles (Sako 75, Finnlight...) would probably give you better accuracy and definately a better quality rifle. These are also a bit more expensive than the Remingtons and Savages.

If you think down the road you may want to customize and accurize, anything in a Remington 700 configuration is probably the way to go.
 
For dirt cheap off the rack performance, 10fp. Swap in an aftermarket lam varmint stock $125 or so. Tactical stocks now range around $300 to 350.

As to Rem being better to customize, no longer. The Savage is now the king of the heap. Being modular and having that barrel nut, you can swap barrels, bolt heads, mags boxes, stocks, triggers, handles, etc., simply by unscrewing it or 'unclipping' the item.

There is no shortage of parts to fit these up as bling as you want. That will only grow as many US shooters are also enjoying price per dollar of these rifles.

Want to change cartridge or cals? Takes about 30mins to change barrel, bolt head, mag box, and stock.

So you can go from varminting, to hunting, to dangerous game, to tactical , to LR or short range BR simply by swapping parts in the comfort of your own home. All with the same action...

My Tikka Master Sporter will do all of that by simply changing the sight picture in the scope, and squeezing the trigger, and with all factory stock parts.:p:D
