I just bought a 45/70 Marlin 1895. It seems like a good lever action rifle but I agree that the quality of Marlin rifles has declined.

OP wants the best... I have NO experience with the best, so I'll reserve my opinion to what I do have experience with... which is the same as "T.O-Gal"... namely the H&R singles... both the Ultra Thumbhole and the Buffalo Classic... both shoot very well, under 2" @ 100 yards consistently, with no fliers (.45/70 is not really a "flier" load)... occasional groups at MOA... a couple sweet groups (always 5 shots) well under MOA... whats not to love about that?
