As the title says what round is the ideal base for a 6.5mm bullet for a bolt action rifle. It would be used for occasional hunting deer size and smaller game but mainly fun range time to about 600 yards. I'm intrigued by the ballistics these bullets offer but can't decide on a starting velocity. The rifle may end up as a gift to my best man for my wedding so I've got time to get one assembled. My short list is 6.5x55 swede. 6.5-06. Or 6.5 grendle.

His only other rifle at this time is a 270 which he uses for hunting. Reloading is not an issue. He is not a serious long range shooter but wants to ring a 8" plate out to 600 yards. Maybe a lil further

I realize everyone has a favorite so let's hear why

I am not much help here for u I would not go with any u suggest lol.

If you want range and accuracy 6.5x284

Good velocity with 140 gr bullets can use 160s and wins 1000 yards shoots consistently

If you want more pop go 264 win mag

But hey anything will work if u find the right combo and load

I love reloading and shooting my TC Icon Precision Hunter in 6.5 Creedmoor, awsome caliber-rifle combo... JP.

The 6.5-06 does the same speed as the 6.5-284. I've not played with the 6.5-284 but have lots of time with the 6.5-06 and it does just under 3000 with a 140 Berger in a 24 inch tube. Mine is very accurate and I have not found myself wishing I went with the 284 version. Although you would get better brass.

6.5x55 has been used successfully for long range.
In a long action, 6.5-06 would make a lot of sense.
.260 has an established track record, as do the other short 6.5s.

I asked the same question a couple weeks ago... I went with 6.5-08 AI (.260 Rem AI)... my short list was the 6.5 Creedmore, 6.5-284 and 6.5-08... decided to AI right away... I prefer the short action calibers.

I'm a big fan of th 6.5x55. Lapua brass is excellent and comes in a long action which gives you lots of room to use those long vlds without taking up a bunch of powder space in the case.

Another vote for the .260 Rem. There was a good article on this topic on 6mmBR or some other site like that

For a range of 600YDS I would look at the 260 Rem and the 6.5X55 Swede. Either one will do the job, however the barrel twist rate at this distance can be 1in8 or 1in8.5 depending on the bullet used.

6.5 x 55 will be fine for 600 yards
I'm building a custom one now
It looks like 2840 is going to be the velocity
I have ran every angle on this gun before starting the build
With sst 140 bullets r 19 powder I intend on making this a tack driver for
Punching elk in the ear with .
We are all ready long range 800-1000
7 mm and 300
Just want something a little lighter for 600

Cheers
Best receipt I can find is 47.5 r 19 2800 fps

You don't "know" the velocity, because you haven't cooked it or tested in your gun... and don't quote the "best" recipe for a gun/caliber you don't own, and have never shot or tested.... calculators are calculators and internet "recipes" are internet "recipes"... all worth their weight in paper... until they are actually tested in reality.

When I was on my 6.5x55 kick, I found that Reloader 19 would never come close to published velocities, and was not terribly accurate either, at least not with 140 partitions. I had better luck with 4831.
If I was to do it again, I would look hard at Viht 165 or 560, depending on bullet weight.
