All kidding aside. Get yourself a bolt action. Many brands have low budget models but are still great rifles. Like the savage 10, remington 700 and the tikka t3. You can find these on the EE for $700-$800. Sometimes even less. And all three will be great shooters.
Calibers is a never ending fight. I think 308 or 270 is a great choice for a all around rifle, especially for a new shooter. Yes there are heavier choices out there but your not going to like the recoil as a new shooter.
