I painted the USGI hand guard, on my M14, it looks great. The problem is the paint peels when gun cleaner touches it. What are the best products to use for this task? $80.00 for a can of Arma-coat is a little pricey for this project. For color I would like to do a flat brown. Thanks for the help.

Krylon rattle cans from Cambodian Tire.....the paint is a bit glossy from handling, but it'll be on there until the end of time:

I've had this paint on for about 3 years now.

Nice paint job.

Mind if I ask what colors you used and if the optic came in that scheme or did you paint it at the same time as the rifle? How did you manage to get those patterns?

Yeah, it was Krylon's camo line of paints, so the tan and the brown. The Millett came with the ATAC pattern on it and figured it was close enough, haha!

Krylon Camo and for excellent durability I always follow up with RONA brand matte clear laquer.
Just make sure the krylon is cured first.
I've done a few hundred M14 stocks and handguards using the following
First detail and repair and blemishes. Then a quick wipe with acetone or my preference , solvent wash 202. Follow up with 2 coats krylon primer, 2 coats krylon paint, 4 coats rona laquer matte clear.

Follow the can but give it 24 hours between last coat of paint and the clear coat. Then a good 24 hour cure on the clear coat prior to fielding the rifle.

+1 for krylon. They also make a matte clear coat that is very tough.

I've searched for and even asked retailers who sell krylon out here in BC and still haven't been able to get my hands on a can of their matte clear spray bomb.... That is how I came to use and recommend Rona brand matte clear laquer. One day I'll find and try some krylon version for comparison

Intersting, I'll have to try the Rona one, because I couldn't find Krylon Matt Clear for the life of me either.

So, interestingly enough, I found it at Wal Mart, but in the crafts section! It was krylon, matte clear coat. I've also read on other forums that some people use matte clear varnishes meant for scale models, but no first hand experience.

That's a bummer, I don't and won't shop at walmart for any reason LOL

I found my last can of that krylon clear at Michael's. I guess it's more of a craft item. I always thought of working on guns as arts and crafts time anyway :)

I used plasti-dip camo brown on my handguard;

The colour isn't perfect, but i like it better than the black. I'm not sure about the durability as I just did it recently. I doubt it will last long as plasti-dip can be pealed off, but for $25 a can...
