So I finally got my PAL and I am ready to get my .22lr rifle so I can practice at the range. I know what rimfire gun I want so I will probably buy it this week.

What I was wondering is when is the best time for me to buy a hunting gun. Should I buy my hunting gun right now that the hunting season is over and the new stock prices are not in effect yet? or should I wait until the early season fall sales? I live in Victoria and, as some people from the lower mainland and Vancouver island might know, there is going to be a new bass pro shop opening in Vancouver in October so that might bring lower prices for later this year.

What time of the year do you guys buy your hunting guns?

Some stores still have stock purchased last year when our dollar was stronger so you will likely find a better deal on these rifles then newer stock arriving now.

Price increases are already a reality.
The Strong American Dollar or the Under Valued Canadian Dollar has been factored in already.
Buy a used gun via the EE or support your local gun show...
Bass Pro likely will not be a saving grace for you considering the 30-40 dollar foot passenger fare .
There are deals and contrary to popular belief guns are not over priced at those type of events.
One last point, do not let my opinion sway you from shopping at Bass Pro or not participating at the gun shows on the Island.
Tight Groups,
Rob

Canadian tire in Langford is selling its pre dollar tank inventory ant old prices, new stock is set to new prices. They have a ton of rifles in 243 and 270 at prices other retailers are well above.

Not my favorite place to buy guns, but they have a few good staff there and have put a lot of effort into their hunting section in the last two years.

Thanks everyone! I got my gun at Canadian Tire in Langford. Actually I got two: a savage mark II bv .22lr $385 and a browning AB3 hunter 30-06 for $665. I went with a "cheaper" rifle for the 30-06 since it is my first rifle and it is strictly for hunting and not showing off ... I am happy :)

I have a mk II. It's a really nice .22 I've been very happy with it. Hope you are too

There is no one answer in a "normal year".

This year, as some have noted you "might" find places that still have last years prices - not everyone jacked the prices of "existing stock" - but that older stock is dwindling and the choices are not always the greatest - but if you can find something you are after bought with 2015 dollars, you are unlikely to ever see that price again in the new market.

If you are looking for a "specific rifle" then waiting for the Black Friday or Boxing Day deals may not work either. If limited quantity is brought to Canada (usually arrives in the very early fall) if you "wait for the deals" you may be out of luck - in Canada most dealers don't normally have the benefit of "re-ordering something that turns out, unpredictably, popular" - it's often a "once a year chance" to put in what you think you will need for the year. So if that "out of stock" turns to "in stock" in the end of August and you just "gotta have" that model, best jump on it if it's anything other than a rifle that every other shop has on hand at the same time. At this time of year none of the wholesalers that we deal with has anything left that anyone wants.

Now, if you are looking at an Axis, Rem 783, American, Patriot or the next tier up - Vanguard II, 700 SPS etc, those are "regularly stocked" and you could hold out for the "free ship - we pay the tax - plus whatever percent off" sales that pop up a couple times a year.

It really depends what you want...

Actually our dollar has been climbing in the last bit, up to 78 cent american from .68 since the beginning of the year. I wonder if prices will drop as quickly as they have risen?
