What is the best twist rate for pistols?

My vote would be for 1:30 out of the choices that you offer. On the other hand while I recognize that many feel that pistols should have a faster twist that rifles, I have not actually seen any data demonstrating there is a real difference in accuracy achieved.

Well Webley WG target revolvers with 7.5 inch Barrels had a greater rate of twist than regular army model WG revolvers.
Being as most of the target Records at Bisley were held by WG target Revolvers id venture a guess that Rate of twist Does make a diffrence.
Could just be Barrel length tho.

There are two problems with the last answer; one is that Step was asking about round ball guns and the Webleys all shot slugs. The second is that it is annecdotal in the sense that we are not talking about two WG revolvers with the same length barrel and different twist rates and the same ammo but rather just that this particular model did well at Bisley and was probably popular for that reason.

Well i think it maters with regular bullets but with rd ball i dont think it really matters.
My 1871 rolling block pistol shoots more accurate with Rd ball than regular bullets it has a 50 70 rifle barrel cut down in it.

Sorry Doug! i missed the part about Rd ball in steps post i would agree with you on the Rd ball ideas :)
