what is the biggest cartridge to fit the rem 700? what I want to know is how big can the bolt face be opened up to safely? Thanks

Some 700 bolts have been opened up for the 338 Lapua (which is the same rim size as the 416 Rigby), but a lot of people figure that leaves the rim too small. However, now that Remington is chambering the 338 Lapua, maybe they have made the bolts for those particular models slightly larger. As I haven't seen one yet, I really couldn't say. - dan

"...What difference does that make..." It matters if the current chambering is say, .223. It about how much bolt face you have to work with.

Then I guess you could open it up to a Short Ultramag.

Seems to me that Remington only has one bolt diameter for the 700 series of rifles. The rifles that where chambered for the .338 Lapua had rims so thin that Remington had to go to a Sako style ejector. I don't think that these rifles ever went public.
