Well the 6.5 grendel works for elk so I'd assume as long as he can shoot the rifle well the 243 will work fine.
Proper bullet and placement.
Deep timber just mean close shots. You aren't shooting through the branches with anything
Personally no I haven't but I have read a load about it due to my 6.5x53R runs the same bullets and velocity and I was wondering about taking it on next years sheep hunt. There was no first hand experience with the 53R so I read about the Grendel since it's ballistically the same. Loads of pics of dead elk. Black Bear and elk seems to be on the bigger side but definitely doable.

In many ways Elmer was dead wrong. He refused to acknowledge bullet construction, and he lived in the era of the Nosler Partition, and married himself to bore size and bullet weight because of it. The older I get, the wiser Jack O’Connor becomes.
Keith was not totally wrong if your only shooting cup and core bullets and your willing to texas heart shot elk from 400 yds away.... bullet construction makes all of Keiths arguments fall short. As has been said many times bullet construction, shot placement. Other reasons for choosing a cartridge are just nit picking preferences and minute details. I like heavy and slow for bush hunting because i get the same performance without the bloodshot meat. But smash a barnes from your 243 through an elks shoulder and you get the same result. Alternatively i have witnessed a 300wsm shooting 180 gr target bullets splash on the shoulder of an elk at 35yds.....bullet construction and placement trump caliber every time.

The difference between O’Connor and Keith is well illustrated by their choice of hats. The two different types of American, you won’t find a quote from O’Connor about ####ting on a grave in jest or not.
I guided both, and preferred the O’Connors. Their rifles worked better for Grizzlies than the Keiths as well.

I imagine it’s much the same in Africa. Legal minimums and logistics notwithstanding. The double rifle as a primary hunting platform for all but maybe Elephants always confused me. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to own and use a double and have nothing against them. But from my way of thinking, they are designed for the professional as tool to mop up messes in close quarters when things are a bit dire. I suspect when packing one that is part of the romance of it. I can’t help but think that a scoped sighted bolt action 375 might be a better tool for actually hunting the dreaded beast.

I always wondered if their hatred was a bit of professional wrestling/theater. Looked at from a "qui bono" point of view it sold a ton of paperwork and it had them both a pretty dedicated following. Could see them sneaking off to have a drink and laughing about it. But I totally believe you on the clients/attitudes.
Funny how the guys who use GOOD bullets driven fast in the 270s sure say its a big game killer, and hear "fastest kills I have had" a couple times.

To answer the part of your post that makes sense to me, the .338 is a good chambering, it’s quick enough. The .450 Marlin, I don’t feel the same about for Grizzlies. Between it and a .270, the .270 wins from what I’ve seen. Which is probably more bears shot than Keith saw.
