What is the built up black thing in barrels?

After shooting I always clean my sks and other surplus rifles, yet all of them (non chromed barrels) have a thick build up of black residue in a few weeks that wasn't there when I put the gun away. I thought it was rust building up, but comes off with a few swabs with the bronze brush. Only see it in my Russian rifles and handguns so I think it's ammo related. Could it be the oil I use drying out and leaving a greasy mess, but then why not in any of the other rifles or shotguns I own? Maybe the oil getting acidy and pulling out the carbon from the steel?

Nothing will be "pulling the carbon out of the steel"

It could be left over oil working away at fouling you missed though.

Do you run a couple dry patches down the barrel after you clean?

Brass brush, clean rag and alternate until clean, then oily rag to make sure all is oiled.

I've used chain oil, gear oil, engine oil, gun oil, g96, I don't know what was used on those last.

Are you using surplus ammo? Could be lacquer residue!

Some ammo uses asphalt as a sealant. It's below the case neck so you don't see it. If you use a kinetic bullet puller to pull surplus bullets, run the case into your seater die to seat the bullet a little deeper just to break the asphalt seal. Then use the kinetic bullet puller. If there is black schitt on the bullet, that's your stuff.

That's actually how I clean my rifles on purpose. Give it the boiling water (if corrosive) then give it a decent cleaning, don't worry about getting it so patches come out clean, a little black is ok for now. Then I run an extra oiled patch down the barrel and let it sit for 2-3 days, after that I can get the barrel clean with only a few more patches.
