What is the deal with steel casings? Bad?

Hi guys, thought maybe somebody could help me understand the difference between steel casings and copper. I would suspect that copper is cheaper, but steel is more reliable and durable? maybe?
 
Steel is cheaper, but does not obturate as well. It is also prone to corrosion (although the combloc seemed to do OK). It also takes a different engineering outlook than brass, so the "culture" of steel is somewhat unique to certain plants.

Steel is much cheaper than brass, and definitely cheaper than copper.
Steel cases generally cant be reloaded, and are beredan primed.

Ah, may bad, yes I meant brass.

So there really is no benefit to steel over brass then?

Cost is the advantage. Steel is most often seen in military surplus ammo, where huge quantities make even small cost savings significant. Can you imagine how many rounds of 7.62x39 the Czech government bought and used, considering how much is left and being put onto the civilian market? When you buy millions of rounds at a time, even a few pennies saved on each round adds up to real money in the end.

my proof is an e mail from ndhq outlining the spending od 1.006 billon dollars on the sarp 2 program. alot of weapons are being replaced, new ammo, new bullet types, steel cases. new pistols the melting down of all no 4 and no 7's. the new c-7 and what they will look like. the demise of the 50 cal mg. its a long email. and due to my job im privy to the details.

Well that certainly sounds interesting! I am surprised to hear about scrapping .50 MGs though.

I think I've heard the same thing about the .50 since the early 80's. I'm a chariborne ranger, so such thinking is above my pay grade. I can't imagine the rational for such a decision. While maybe today having an infantry unit humping a tripod mounted M-2 isn't warranted, I can't see how the armoured vehicles are well served with this move.
 
well guys the goverment already invested a pile of money into this program. i have an email talking about the lack of parts and the cost of keeping the m2. but the same e mail talks about us getting steel cased 50 rounds. so is it being replaced? im not sure but the sounds of the e mail it is and being replaced by another 50 cal mg.
