What is the difference between Beretta 92 and 96?

I believe the 92 is 9mm and the 96 was .40s&w. I don't know much, could be wrong.

if both are DA/SA pistols then the only diff is caliber
92 (M9) = 9mm
96 = 40SW

if the 96 is DAO (usually ex-police surplus) there is no safety/decoking on slide like 92 models

But seriously, I believe the frames are the same, but with a different top end assembly. My understanding is that the 96s in .40 are much more problematic than the 9mm 92s in terms of reliability and long term durability.

I believe the 96 is out of production but the new 96A1 is on the market. Supposedly they fixed the issues the original 96 had.
