.303 Mags
Hi All,
Just one other note about the .303 British mags should be mentioned, as pertaining to the No.Mk1, No.4Mk1* and No.4Mk2 rifles; and possibly the No.5 Jungle Carbine.
Some of the earlier trial rifles of the series mentioned above will have magazines that are not interchangable with the later production models due to the non-standardization of parts.
In this case, the earlier made magazines, will have an "A" stamped on them; while the later models will have a sytlized "B" stamped on them. My BSA-Shirley No.4Mk1 has a Savage magazine with this "B" marking, indicating it is interchangable with other later model Lee-Enfield No.4 rifles.
For these early production trial rifles, they have an "A" prefex (an "A" in front of the rifle's serial number indicating before modification and/or overhaul); or an "A" suffix (an "A" after the rifle's serial number indicating post-mod and/or overhaul) on the rifle's serial number.
Have a look at Ian Skinnerton's book, "The Lee-Enfield Story", which one can get on loan from your local library, to get this information. This is what I did confirm what has already has been said.
I hope this helps further.
