Is it just me, or have others noticed that the EE asking price for a antique status restored Colt SAA seems to have jumped by about a thousand dollars in the last year?

A thousand? You're being generous sir :).

Allow me to advocate as it's been a while since I've sold a SAA in any condition I currently have no dog in this debate ;).

Prices anywhere have gone nuts, seriously nuts. Something that you could have gotten for $3000 last year is nearly doubled, and that's before bringing it in to Canada.

Combine that with the shrunken pool of antique status SAA in Canada since the March 2014 policy change at the SFSS and the pickings are very slim. Now you have the same amount of competition from pre March that know what prices are commanding North, South, East or West of the border that are currently willing to pay to play in order to keep selling in Canada, which drives purchase prices further up. The majority of buyers lean to the opinion of what the SFSS thinks, so that means .41colts and other original caliber antiques are the new target for conversions and there are very few in comparison to those that were originally chambered in .45colt. Original caliber antiques in a rare chambering that are in any condition command higher premiums prior to conversion.

Then combine that with inflation, raises of prices at the border, devaluing of our dollar, increases of shipping and all associated costs, and the fact a seller that pays to be on here is admitting to trying to make some profit and you see that it's a good time to sell if you own.

If people want to have sellers up here continue what they're doing then the prices are only going in one direction.

^^^^ You present a very well thought out and pervasive augment as to why prices have gone up so much, it makes me kick myself for not getting into antique Colt SAA's earlier. Your .44 is super nice too!

Thank you.

I'm not the one selling the .44 ;). Unless you mean the Webley 455/476 I have for sale, then I have to agree with you it is super nice :D.

It's a good time to own an antique, prices for the foreseeable future are only going in one direction :).

This is unfortunately the case. 2 year ago at the antiques arm show in vegas I passed up on a restored 1892 SAA 4-3/4" Blued and cased colored in a nice case for $2600 and there was a 60% original Blue and case colored antique.41 LC SAA for $4200 USD and our dollar was on par. This year at the show I couldnt find a beat up Colt SAA for under $3000 and the cheapest .41's there were 5-6K.

It's not just the SAA's that have gone nuts in pricing. Recently watched a Webley MKII .45acp close on par with Canadian prices because the seller was located in NY and so was the buyer. Prices for everything are going up up up.

You can pretty well directly lay price increases Stateside at the feet of the new state ammunition capacity laws, different state registries, and general fear of a new round of Presidential gun bans. From what I've heard people are banking on antiques being overlooked or remaining "non-firearms" in the US. If it's center fire it's now desirable.

Of course now anything that's coming out of the US that has increased in price has a parallel price increase here.

The days of cheaper antiques in the US have largely passed. Our dollar went down in value, and OTOH demand is strengthening in the US as their economy improves.

A friend of mine picked up a nice antique SAA at a major gun show in Florida just over a year ago for about $3,000. This year he went back and was shocked to see that there were very few for sale and those that were, were all well over $4,000. My bro-in-law is an American and he says that, thanks to the Obama admin., a lot of Americans are trying to get their hands on antique status Colts because they are not regulated or registered. That has no doubt contributed to the rise in demand and prices.

Cowboy Action is huge and the demand is out stripping supply!

A few years ago my wife and I where part of a 18 person posse at a Wyoming cowboy shoot. She and I and one fellow from St. Louis were using Uberti's, every other shooter in the posse was using 1st or 2nd gen SAA Colts...talk about feeling like the poor cousin at the banquet.
One fellow, "Big Hat" from Texas had two pairs of colts with him. One pair, he called his "going to town" pistols...both 1880's 1st gens with absolutely beautiful stag horn grips. He wore his double rig with these guns everywhere he went in town, the bar-dining hall-lounge- day or night.
His "working guns", were still first gens but smokeless frames with regular black colt grips

Not exactly a Colt SAA, but I don't think I'll be letting this go anytime soon (re. ever).
