Just curious if anyone has ever performed actual tests to see if "low noise" .22's really are low noise, and which one has the lowest sound signature. I tried some remington subsonic hollow-points but to my ear at least they sounded just as loud, if not even louder  than some of the stardard stuff. Would be useful here for pest riddance applications (And the occasional wabbit that wanders in the yard  ) without freaking out the neighbors.

In Huson???  Man those people will freak out at the smallest incident. You'll be on the front page of the local newspaper accused of animal genocide

Somebody correct me if I am wrong, but sub-sonic .22 in a ported barrel might be a bit more quiet.

+1 on the CCI CB's, I think they would be quieter than subsonics in a ported barrel....when I first tried them, I thought I farted.

I've used Winchester Target shorts in a Cooey 60 and all I heard was a small pop. It was kind of funny at the time, because it didn't sound much louder than the pellet guns I have.KD

Yeah well I happen to live in the "reasonably livable" part of Hudson (north of the 40), one of my neighbors (name witheld to protect the innocent  ) has done a pretty good job at keeping the squirrel population down, sure the cops came over a couple of times after hearing "gunshots", but he showed them his nail gun (registry confirms he doesn't have any firearms ), a couple of spent cartridges, and that new painting he just hung on his wall and things worked out fine, they stopped bothering to come over after 2 or 3 times . Most of the people in the neighborhood kept #####ing this summer how their gardens were getting eaten up by critters (lots of sightings of cottontails show the probable culprit(s)), I'm not really surprised as my lawn looked like a freakin' highway last winter, whenever there would be any new snow I swear you couldn't find a single square foot that wasn't trampled within 6 hours.

Of course, that kind of massive over-population will bring in canine predators (Fox, Coyote, Wolf) sooner or later, which will SERIOUSLY freak people out here (worried about their kids getting bitten and catching rabies and all that  ) but in the meantime if I could get myself an occasional meal no one <should> mind....

Lemme know that works out for ya. I go to hudson at least once every 2 weeks to help out my mom. If I hear any "pifs!pifs!" I'll know your busy thinning the heard :)

Hahaha call me up mof !!! I'll bring my Toz-99 and we'll help out Rob.

I've been experimenting with subsonic ammo lately, the remington subsonic's 1050fps "seem" to be as loud as regular "high" velocity rounds 1200+fps however in open terrian you do not get the supersonic echo rebounding back.
Its a shame these rounds have at least one FTF per box- as I find them reasonably accurate.

I'm currently trying CCI Short HP's, 710fps accurate to 25yds but then flop 6 inches low at 50. Decent mushrooming expansion into phone books due to soft lead.

I'm having a ball using the old Cooey 600 on black squirrel and I like reduced noise for a first shot- but after that if I'm on a squirrel for a while I use the regular rounds- hope that helps.

Keep in mind that the speed of sound varies with air pressure and temperature. As the air gets denser, the speed of sound of sound increases. I have shot the Rem Subsonics on warm days and gotten the supersonic crack and no crack on cold days. Same box of ammo.

Well, you guys are welcome to drop by anytime you want as it's always a pleasure to meet new gunnutz :D . Better keep the gun stuff quiet though, my neighbors aren't exactly the most gun-friendly folks you can find  .
