What is the most popular Russian rifle these days?

I think SKS's are more popular but probably there are more Mosins in total, My favorite is the SVT when they are running just right.

I hear you! I spend about an hour fussing with my SVT for every minute that I might spend shooting. It is a love-hate relationship.

Price has quite a bit to do with it, both the rifle and ammo, not everything but a lot. Just answer this, if the ammo/rifle/availability and price was the same,,, which one would you choose,,, and you could only have one! In that case,, probably SVT, but sks/ammo are usually cheaper, they are really cool and available so I like those. If SKS go up much in price, of course the volume of sales will go down same as most surplus firearms. How many people would buy an SKS or SVT-40 or Mosin for $500? What is your price limit for either one of these?

svt40's are climbing in value fast. I have all three and like the svt the best. its like a really powerful sks

Agreed same with me. SVT is a really well designed rifle and a bit different. Mine is also surprisingly accurate, while the barrel is not to hot. I need to shim the barrel. Once I got the gas dialed in works like a damn.

My 2 rubles worth of advice...

SVT-40 for sheer "badassness" !!

Mosin Nagant for sheer versatility !!

I have nothing to say about the SKS... simply not interested is all.

I would agree with this post only I'd add for the SKS... endless affordable fun in 5 round blasts at 50 yds or less. Still, that doesn't particularly interest me at all either. I never take my SKS's out now unless I'm taking a new shooter. The minimal recoil and fun affordable factor seems to draw more folks in to shooting than my mosin or svt.

I'm having a lot of fun trying to shrink my SKS 300m group size! A trip to the range isn't complete without a try. Wait until I get a peep for it!
The M-N and SVT are cooler but the SKS is fun, fun, fun!

I think sadly the Prohib status exempts the AK47 - and I won't dare put the Valmet or the Finn's in the same group as the Soviets.

Lots of good comments here.

1. SKS - largely due to the price of ammo.
2. Mosin - due to the price of the rifle - and as one member stated there may be more Mosins out there in Canada than SKS.
3. SVT - coolest in regards to history and design in my mind - but the most expensive.

SKS is by far the best of the three. Next I would choose Mosin carbines, then the Mosin 91/30.
SVT always feel cheap and poor quality to me. The receiver, the action, the trigger, the stock the mag.
Lots of fuss because its a semi auto that has a factory muzzle brake and had lower production numbers than the other two. The design failed and was not widely accepted for reason IMO.

Personally for me the ones I shoot the most are the Mosins. If I could only keep one it would have to be a Mosin of one variant or an other. Nice powerful round, fairly accurate and the long history make these rifles winners in my book.

Mosin M38, at least it would be if there was more of them. I enjoy the SVT, SKS too, but the Mosins are underrated firearms in my opinion.

Another thing that makes the Mosin Nagant more popular these days is the corrosive ammo. Some of us don't have the time or want to strip down a sks or svt-40 for cleaning. The simple clean out the barrel and bolt is easy least.

SKS in any variety!
