What is the most versatile 45-70 load?

You are going to get a tonne of different answers to this one.
For me, I would go with a cast OMA bullet - 405gr bullet, Winchester brass (or Rem), Federal 210 primer, and IMR3031 powder. Load it up, down, sideways and it will work for what I want/need.

Rem 405gr, 50gr IMR3031, Win brass, Win large rifle primers.
Powerful, accurate, and easy to source components. I've tried dozens of other bullet/powder combinations, but the Rem 405 and 3031 combo seems to be the best overall. It's all I load anymore... besides the big 550gr Craters for bear defense.

So far I've shot a ruffed grouse, a coyote, a white tail deer and a black bear with this load as well as several squirrels.
Travels at 1800fps and is very accurate in my Guide Gun.

That might be a better way to put it!
At least the ruffed grouse (I've shot two with it now that I think about it) were head shots.
500 gr Lfn for the big stuff, these are large meplat but made to fit and function in the Marlin, for the big stuff and smokeless powder. For deer either the 325gr. WFN GC at close to 2300fps, or the new "Improved Gould" HP gas check at those same speeds or less. All this is some serious Sh%T.
