With the types of collectors this board has, i'm sure some people (especially in this section) have to own some pretty old stuff.

What's the oldest piece you own? and the oldest piece you've ever seen in a private collection?

I've got a buddy who was born in Morocco.
he has an old Flintlock double shotgun,
and an really ANCIENT MATCHLOCK single smooth bore musket,
plus some cool really old Arabic knives.

I'd guess 14th / 15th century for the matchlock,
and 17th/18th for the flint lock.
but I am certainly NOT an expert on antique firearms.

Not much real exciting: an original Trapdoor Springfield, 1873, an old Damascus-barreled 24 ga. SXS, a 16 ga. about the same age (1880's as near as i could track it), and a nifty little Stevens Favorite .22 shotgun about 1925.

Oldest thing I OWN is the lock from an English musket, roughly Civil War era (1650s).

Oldest things I have SEEN in a collection..... rather nice pair of German wheellock fowlers, about 1590. I was actually allowed to TOUCH one! Pair went for about the price of my house. Nice.

Apart from that, it's all been 1850 and later.

Right now, starting to save up for a Bess some day, hopefully get me back into another century.

My oldest aren't very old, an original Rem. Rolling block from 1867 and a SXS 12 Gauge made by "Nock" around the same year. I shoot them both alot.

Father has a 17th Century Chinese matchlock.

One inch smooth bore thats nearly 5 feet long. Kinda a neat old peice. He also has an Indian matchlock purportedly made from railroad iron.

Oldest one I can absolutely date is a flintlock shotgun made by James Wilkinson & Son. Entered into the company ledger Sept. 7, 1822. Have an I/I\D marked Indian gun made prior to 1818.

Not as old as I see some with but for me very nice to have and hold....1905 Marlin 25-20 and 2 -1906 Winchester levers (dom Sept and Dec.)...I love shooting them all.

As for oldest I have seen and held....a buddy has it....he said it was an 8 guage shotty...never seen such a big shell nor bore. Sorry did not know the DOM., but sure was old.

Mine aren't overly old. I regularly shoot an 1857 Snider and several percussion shotguns from about the same period. What are the oldest guns you guys have actually shot? I have a rule that I don't own anything I can't shoot.

Oldest gun I have actually shot was a buddy's pristine 1777 Charleville .69" musket, one of the muskets which Lafayette brought to America during the American Revolution.

It was a LOT of fun to shoot.

Wow, that's a pretty nice piece.

Wonder what those even sell for these days?
