What is the process to importing an antique from the US

First make sure that it is an antique in Canada.Then have it shipped to you or go and get it.Then pay duty etc and it is yours.
It helps to have some information on hand if you bring it across the border as some Customs officers do not know what an antique is .
I brought 4 personally back and had one shipped to me last year with no problem,

make sure you get the seller to mark on the box "110+ year old antique" also get the seller to make a billofsale saying the gun is a antique , the cal. and how much you paid.

Either of these:
1)Nothing.
2)Have the seller state the details of the firearm: Make, model, caliber, serial number, DOB on the customs decleration.
3)Get an RCMP Antique Status Letter and send a copy to the seller to include with the customs details.
I do number 2 and it works out well, passes quickly through customs.

I've bought at least nine from US sites and all were shipped with only one problem. The problem gun was a Colt Thunderer that was a Sherrifs model with a three inch barrel that
the customs lady insisted was a prohib. This went on for a couple of weeks untill a real expert with customs straightened her out to the fact that antique firearms were exempt from this rule. Just make sure it's a prescribed antique up here.

recently brought 3 pieces across the line and it could not have gone smoother. one was flintlock rifle so no problem. second was a civil war era caplock pistol. knew the ser # ahead of time so got the rcmp letter as a precaution also downloaded some info on it for interest. gave these to the customs people along with firearms act extract on what is an antique and it went beautifully also had a last minute purchase with no letter but caplock again and accepted with no problem. unless you run into a real a**hole as long as you keep the smile on should go well. also make sure you comply with safe transport rules--trigger lock or locked case for handguns. regards,bill
