What is the scoop with IVI components

At the beginning of the EE a notice from the moderators/administrator states that dealing in IVI components is forbidden. I hope I am not treading on sacred ground but I wonder why.
I don't want to buy or sell any neither. If this subject is taboo let me know and I will take the thread down.

To avoid unlawful government property. All the government surplus stuff is sold as scrap to be melted down.

They used to give lots of it to DCRA so there does tend to be a lot of older stuff around.

Lots of commercial hunting and target ammunition in various calibers with IVI headstamp was sold over the counter years ago, lots of that brass is still floating around. It appears to me that this IVI restriction is out of date, too general and pointless.

Yep.

There are commercial resellers, buying batch lots of small arms brass from Crown Assets and packaging the stuff for sale.

For years the Military was pretty free handed with handing out ammo to various units and functions, then went all tight-arsed about it, and demanded that all of the brass they sold be de-milled. They seemed to have stepped away from that as a general requirement a couple years back, but the default answer to anyone with IVI brass still seems to be to act like a five year old with a pout on, threatening to 'tell on you'.

Whatever. I like my IVI brass, I know how I came by mine! :) Not selling it either.

This the new reality. I can pick up IVI brass off our range on any given day. It used to be rare, but now is more common than Federal or Winchester brass.

Completely agree. 9mm IVI is the most common brass on the range hands down. . The odd blaser and speer and some nickel Winchester.
Maybe because users other than Corrections or RCMP pick up their brass or most of it.

I think the reason IVI is being seen so much lately is it's apparent popularity with commercial reloaders. Since the brass can now be sold as is it offers further cost savings with excellent availability. It's also another reason I think the CGN ban on private sales of IVI is stupid.

I do not know about Canadian IVI brass and its sales in Canada, but American Lake City brass is sold by the contractor manufacturing the ammunition and brass at Lake City.
And this is done to lower the cost of the ammunition to our military and someone should check to see if your IVI manufacture is doing the same.

I know more and more things made for the military are "contracted out" to the cheapest bidders and maybe you Canadians are doing the same.

I can tell you when Remington and then Winchester ran Lake City Army Ammunition plant the brass and loaded ammunition was not sold to the commercial civilian market. Then when Alliant Techsystems (ATK) took over production at Lake City the contract allowed them to sell ammunition and brass made at Lake City that lowered the cost to the military.

And I will assume your IVI brass is made to the same military standards as American Lake City brass and harder brass is used for these cases.

It is a pretty silly rule considering there are many lawful ways to acquire IVI components.

At one time not so long ago IVI brass wasn't so easy to get. But now even CGN sponsors have been selling it, so I agree this rule is not useful any more.

It all USED to be required to be destroyed or it had to maintain something stupid like 25 years worth of end user record keeping.

But not any more. You can go look yourself, and read the terms and conditions of the sales of SA brass going back at least in to the last year on the Crown Assetts site. If you had bids in on any of the lots, even stinky low ones, you can search back farther in your own account.

But honestly, the stuff sells for enough money that I wonder if the bid price was just to spite someone else, by keeping them from getting it. Some big numbers getting thrown down!
