Guys, I need something in an air rifle to do a little "control" work around my property. (squirrels, starlings). .22 rimfire is out of the question.



What's your recommendation for a highly accurate .177 rifle? Cost?

Can you scope these things or not?

go to www.dlairgunDOTcom He will answer all your questions. My pick would the be Weihrauch line.
 
Check out airguns only.net, and read about the talon or condor. They are air charged single shot, but are the most powerful.

The Weihrauch line is also the best for craftmanship, and style. There is also a HW80 in the EE!:D

As Foxer mentions below, we need to know the reasoning behind the use of an air rifle, if is only because of the noise there are some serious air rifles available. If it is because you need to stay under 500fps for using it in the place you plan to use it as a non licence/registration required 'device', that is a whole other set of air rifles.

You could get a sub 500fps rifle and feed it 'nice' top end pellets.

That would make it a gun by our laws. If he could use firearms where he is, he'd just use 22 short subsonics or those 'pellet' rounds or something.

I assume he doesn't want a gun that the cops consider to be a 'gun'.

The 'bird shot' rounds are laughable, I bought a box for 'giggles'. Produced less then 1/8" penetration in pine board at 10 feet. Not sure what they would work for other then 'scare' tactics.

They work on rats and squirrels at close range. VERY close range :) but they don't put holes in things like roofs or walls.

They definitely wouldn't put any holes, that is for sure. Perhaps I can use them for mole hunting. :)

Anything in the Diana line, like a No.34, 36, 48 or 52 would fill the bill. If you are scoping a spring-piston air rifle, you do need a special scope. Bushnell makes a couple of sleeper scopes like the 72-0039 that can often be found for under $80.
 
If you want accuracy,the hw 97 is hard to beat.I have the hw-97 laminate with a maccarri kit and venom seal installed and it is extremely smooth and accurate.I bought my rifle from Scott at Airguns Only which is based out of Saskatchewan.Be sure to use an airgun approved scope,or it will shake apart.My air rifle did produce a one shot kill on a groundhog from about 30 yards.
