Hi there, i have a Savage 110 in a 7mm rem mag. It has a regular hunting barrel on it, im just wondering what kinda range capabilities i have with this set-up.

thanks

With the right bullet, 1500 yards easy. Depending on temperature and elevation, over 2000 yards is doable.

But, getting the bullet there is one thing, accuracy is another...

I don't what to sound like a #### about this but, what are your capabilities at 1000 yards? I would have to take a wild guess and say 95-99% of the precision rifles out there can out shoot the shooter.

"...getting the bullet there is one thing, accuracy is another..." Exactly. Like kombayotch says, the bullet matters a whole bunch. Especially at very long range. The bullet will go a lot farther than 2,000 yards, but hitting anything is another thing altogether.
A Remington factory 175 grain PSP bullet with the rifled sighted in at 200 will drop 44.8" at 500 yards. Only 1372 ft/lbs of energy will be left at 1879fps.
A 150 grain Accu-tip shoots 10" flatter at 500(drops 34.1"), has 1697 ft/lbs of energy at 2258fps. All Remington factory ammo bullets drop like bricks between 300 and 400 yards. Hunting bullets will do that. They're not made for very long range accuracy.
Match grade bullets on the other hand are. I'd be thinking a 162 grain Hornady A-Max or a Sierra 175 grain Matchking, using a carefully worked up handload, for 1,000 yards. Mind you, no magnum will be fun shooting targets out of a hunting rifle for any length of time.
For hunting, think 400 to 500 yards with an Accutip or its equivalent(Nosler BT, etc). Even that requires thorough knowledge of the rifle and cartridge. Plus a fair bit of experience reading the wind.
Don't even think about taking a 1,000 yard shot at any game with any bullet or cartridge. Not enough energy left for a clean kill.

what kind of grouping would i be looking at with a standard barrel at 1000yrds

There really isn't a standard, factory barrels aren't all build the same. I would think that 1.5-2 MOA (~15-20" @1000 yards) wouldn't be unreasonable for most modern bolt action hunting rifles with light barrels.

At that distance things like wind, temperature, humidity, mirage and skill (amoung other things) come into play.

I was referring to the bullet still being supersonic at the 1500+ yards. Bullets will go much further, but tend to tumble as the pass out of supersonic range. Then there is no hope of accuracy.

"...with light barrels..." And good ammo. I'd be kind of surprised if any 7mm mag bullet was still supersonic at 1,000. Considering factory velocities run between 1524fps and 2258fps at 500. Hodgdon shows all but one load using 150 to 175 grain bullets having a max velocity under 3,000fps.

1000 yards is a joke with a 7mm magnum. Hell, the 308 will do 1200 with VLDs.

Take a simple load: 162gr. AMAX (BC= 0.625) @ 2600fps... a modest velocity.

1000 yards: 1420fps

The barrel being light has nothing to do with the velocity.

I have a 110 heavy barrel Savage in 7mmRM. Use 162 AMAXes, as per the post above, and a LIGHT load of 61.5gr RL22 is my most accurate load = 2850fps. I've had this bullet near 3100 with no pressure signs but reduced accuracy. 1000m is not a limiting factor in pure terms of distance, not by far.

MY gun shoots about .75 MOA out to 700 and should do same out much further. YOUR gun, well, you'd have to shoot it to see what it's capable of!

I'm thinking about 150 yards with a good rest. If you have to ask about what distance to shoot with a "regular hunting barrel", this might be your limit. I'm not trying to be snotty, but it sounds like more practice, and more reading on shooting is needed.

"...The barrel being light has nothing to do with the velocity..." Hi. Totally agree. I was suggesting that the ammo had to be high quality too.
That 33 foot drop at 1,000, even if sighted in at 200, is interesting to say the least.

how can u tell i need more practice by what i write? ive had plenty of time behind a rifle. Ive only shot out to 500yrds though with 160gr factory loads and i was wondering if a 7mm rem mag, as it is with a sport barrel, be able to accuratly reach 1000yrds taking wind value and speed into consideration.

I have shot mine sub MOA at 900yds. Haven't gone further but know the bullet will make the trip easily to a mile.

The biggest problem I have is that the barrel overheats after only a few rds. Then it goes from accurate to spray/pray.

162gr Amax over Re25 lit by Fed 215M and Rem brass has worked wonderfully for me.

Enjoy...

Jerry
