What is this little critter?

So I was laying out in the grass trying to find some coyotes on the weekend and found a couple of these critters on the rifle stock when i got back up. Ticks?

As kids we called 'em Ketchup Bugs cuz they left a tiny ketchup like stain when you squished them.

does seem to look like one of those. at least I don't think it is a tic anymore.

Doesnt resemble a tick in shape or colour so I would say it is not a tick but have no idea what it is to be honest?

If you have become a hairy chested nut scratcher since taking that picture then I would visit the pharmacy for "Kawalda" shampoo or "bornex". We used to apply these liberally to new admissions to kill such creepy crawlies before the whole ward was infected.
