for now i can only describe it unless someone wants to put in my post a picture that i'd send him via e-mail...
here it goes: sort of scope,1 inch or 1 1/4 diameter,brass with kaki paint on,about 15 or 16 inch long with a sliding tube about 4 ou 5 inches at one end,on the body,engraved:telescope,sighting,no 22c. mk II

I am not a gunner but I believe Redleg is correct.... however I think rather than direct fire these optics were primarily used for sighting on the aiming stakes....

No, indirect sights had revolving heads on them.
 
Redleg was a gunner... Hence the nickname Redleg.

say what?? Don't doubt he was a gunner but the nickname redleg for a gunner is a new one on me... asked my local gunner expert as well...he never heard it either....where does this come from??....aaahh USA!
