Found on most HK rifles and sub guns...
 
its a bottle opener for pulling the cap of your heiniken when the days shooting is done.:dancingbanana: Well, ok, I have no idea, but I bet you could use it as a bottle opener:cheers:
 
I believe it's for the 3-point tac sling doohickie that they have, clip the center buckle to that and it retains it against your chest. When you need to engage a target, you simply put your hand on the pistol grip, the other on the fore-stock, push out, and with a properly adjusted sling, the clip will release as you push out, the weapon will get pushed out to arm length and will point naturally at the target. As you bring the weapon up, come on aim and fire. You don't bring the weapon back against your body to absorb the recoil, you just push out against the sling tension.

Or at least, that's how I remember it from the course I had in 1997 from a factory rep....it's only been a decade now....I could be wrong.

This was an added on feature in the late 70's. The earlier HK handguards did not have this metal clip.

WHAT? A German having a Heiniken? Have you ever known a German who'd willingly and knowningly having something Dutch if there was an alternative? :p :p

That would be like giving a Frenchman some English meatpie and calling it gourmet cuisine. :D ........sidetrack joke, sorry

A result of the emergence of tactical / swat and counterterrorism teams and the ensuing bids to arm them.
