What is this?

PEQ 2.

It is an infrared lazer for aiming while using NVG's. When wearing NVG's you can't use the rifle sights, so you aim by pointing the infrared lazer on the target.

At least that's my civilian knowledge of how it works.

Thanks much for the input, I assumed it was for targeting in some sense, however, when I thought about it being a laser, I thought why would someone risk losing the element or surprise by doing the equivalent of shining a big flashlight around ( at least to any bad guy who has a crappy tire NVG set)

Further it was my understanding that generally infrared flashlights and whatnot are frowned upon because they are not a passive system like a light collection/concentration NVG.

As I understand it, passive infared only collects infared where as the other one, shoots out infared and then collects it bouncing off things, so a laser would not be passive.

Correct, a laser is active.
 
Huh, I always thought it was a small rail mounted box for like snacks or mRe's.......
