I know it's a mosin ... but what model? The calibre is 7.62x54r correct? A friend called me up saying he got this rifle but wasn't sure of the name/model. It appears to be NEW and I think all the #'s are matching. The bayonet is weird as it's like a cross ... ouch if poked with this thing! I had him bring it over and took some pics. Any info appreciated.

That handy, handsome rifle is an m44 mosin nagant. 7.62x54r. It is a great rifle that will shoot much better with the bayonet removed. but you may need to move the front sight to get it to shoot point of aim but thats not much of a job. enjoy. the bayonet shape is called "cruciform" and it is used because wounds that shape don't close on their own. you are right it is a nasty peice of work that will fully penetrate a man with steel left over. If you weld it to a rod it makes a good fire poker

What would this be worth? It has all matching #'s and looks like it's brand new and doesn't even look like it's been shot ... these pictures do not do it justice!

I have to disagree with the part about shooting better with the bayonet removed. Each and every rifle is different, before removing anything shoot it with the bayonet in the folded and extended position. Only then will know what suits your particular carbine.

350 is not a stretch at all for that rifle. Most likely it was never issued or fired since it left the Radom factory. Awesome big game carbine.

Good rifle for Moose, Caribou or big white bears.

It shoots 7.62x54R ammo which is now available at many places doen here in the sybaritic South. It is a ballistic twin to the .30-'06, just using a .310 - .312 slug instead of a .308.

Nice rifle which will flatten anything in North America with one round.

Also fun on Coke tins.

That particular m44 is probably mint so if you want to try what I suggest I would do it on a less expensive mosin but mounted with a scope these rifles are reliable handy and deadly. a recoil pad however is a nice addition to these rifles as the recoil with the standard stock shape is a bit serious.

The bayonet was outlawed in the Geneva convention due to wounds that it inflicts, the tapered pyramid/star/triangular/whatever you want to call it design insures that the woud cavity itself cannot be stitched in anyway by medical staff, as there are no '2' sides of flesh for stitching to generally take place. From the tip to the very base of that bayonet that would be one heck of a hole to fix thats for sure, as the taper itself is pretty intense...

They are also built very tough and robust, (like the rest of the firearm), I observed a fellow gunsmithing colleauge extend the bayonet and then proceed to hurl the entire rifle at a concrete wall (for our little sudo/cynical gunsmithing torture test) being it a 7-8 pound spear lobbed at around 8 feet, it took chips out of the concrete with no damage (besides scrapes/cosmetics) to the overall shape/straightness of the bayonet at all, I was very impressed... They build them tough thats for sure!

WOW thanks for the replies. I can't get over how it appears bloody brand new ... thanks again for the replies and info. Cheers,

From what I read, many of these rifles were made in the early to mid 1950s and placed into war time storage in case of a western invasion. That seems to be the general feeling as so many of these, as you know, are in near new or mint condition overall.
