I was given this ammo to try and sell from a friend. It's really old and I doubt it's still safe to shoot. Is it worth anything to a collector or should I just tell him to get rid of it?

I know the translation is sharp cartridges, 9mm obviously. I would think they are German for sure but possibly Dutch as well. Most likely old submachine gun ammo. To find out more tell us what is written on the headstamps and that would help for further info.

Looks like Dutch post-war 9mm ball ammo. A better headstamp pic would be helpful. That one round shown is junk, but if the rest is clean you should be able to fire it happily in any 9x19 pistol, carbine, or SMG. It all depends on how it was stored.

Ok, what you have is old repacked German WWI ammo. It's just short of 100 years old and I wouldn't expect any kind of reliability. Some might go bang, some might hang-fire, and some might do nothing. I don't recall seeing that box before, might interest a 9mm specialist collector.

"..... Sunray your a ### ....." , learn how to write properly in posts, you got alot of them.
What would you call 9mm that could be used in a submachine gun thats not recent then. MP40 9MM SMG is a submachine gun chambered in 9mm.
Look up submachine guns on wiki, clearly defined as an automatic carbine designed to fire pistol cartridges. 9mm = pistol cartridge.
Need any more info?

Awesome! Thanks for the info! Now here's the real question. What's it worth? $10 box? $50? $100? I'm guessing my $10 guess is probably closer to it's real value.

I asked "the General" about this, probably the biggest 9mm collector in the world. Got the following reply. Doesn't really answer you, but it is interesting none-the-less:

"The box is pretty well known. I have the identical box (down to the lot number). It was a 1953 Swedish contract for the Dutch and the original contents were headstamped // 5 // K // 3 // and a lot was sold quite a few years ago for shooting in the US. It looks like someone reused the boxes for some old WWI Geco ammo. Too bad because the old 16rd WWI boxes are worth about $30 even in kinda rough shape."

"...old submachine gun ammo..." No such thing.
I'd guess it's commercial. No NATO number on the packages. Only has collector value if the boxes are closed and sealed as they came out of the factory. You should be able to figure out where it was made by the headstamp. Start here. http://cartridgecollectors.org/?page=headstampcodes

Crap sunray! 9mm was around long before Nato! Nato adopted 9mm it wasn't created by Nato. You really say some silly stuff sometimes. Thankfully it's usually harmless but you really really need to be more careful.
