Maybe I'm just too old these days but last I heard a gun needed a 18.5 inch barrel to be unrestricted, but I've seen guys with 22s that have only 16 point something inch barrels that I don't think are restricted. Take the Ruger SR22 for example.

What's the deal?

Ya I remember a barrel length minimum.
Its in the Criminal code

Not for a factory-made rimfire barrel. For instance, 10" barrels for a Ruger 10/22 are perfectly legit. Same with "backpacker" style shotguns for that matter. Cutting your own barrel past a certain length is illegal though.

Restricted firearm* means:

a.a handgun that is not a prohibited firearm,

b.a firearm that ◦is not a prohibited firearm,
◦has a barrel less than 470 mm in length, and
◦is capable of discharging centre-fire ammunition in a semi-automatic manner,

c. a firearm that is designed or adapted to be fired when reduced to a length of less than 660 mm by folding, telescoping or otherwise, or

d. a firearm of any other kind that is prescribed to be a restricted firearm in the Regulations Prescribing Certain Firearms and other Weapons, Components and Parts of Weapons, Accessories, Cartridge Magazines, Ammunition and Projectiles as Prohibited or Restricted.

Prohibited firearm* means:

a.a handgun that ◦has a barrel equal to or less than 105 mm in length, or
◦ is designed or adapted to discharge a 25 or 32 calibre cartridge, but does not include any such handgun that is prescribed, where the handgun is for use in international sporting competitions governed by the rules of the International Shooting Union,

b.a firearm that is adapted from a rifle or shotgun, whether by sawing, cutting or any other alteration, and that, as so adapted, ◦is less than 660 mm in length, or
◦is 660 mm or greater in length and has a barrel less than 457 mm in length,

c. an automatic firearm, whether or not it has been altered to discharge only one projectile with one pressure of the trigger, or

d.any firearm that is prescribed to be a prohibited firearm in the Regulations Prescribing Certain Firearms and other Weapons, Components and Parts of Weapons, Accessories, Cartridge Magazines, Ammunition and Projectiles as Prohibited or Restricted.

The use of the word OR means.... don't mix the colors.

So then you could have any length barrel as long as the overall length is 26"

For Rimfire, either semi or manual action, yes. But it has to be a factory barrel.

For centerfire rifles and shotguns, yes, so long as it is a manual action AND a factory barrel.

Fortunately, there are quite a number of factory options for both categories.

i like this , it makes things much easier when reading "legalese " .

8" barrel on the blue one and 10" on the green one.
the 8" blue one has a OAL of just over 26 1/4 so its legal.
- sorry dont have a pic of it with the 4" compensator off of the blue one but the comp dosnt count towards barrel length as it can be removed.

i believe Dlask use to have a pic on their site with the tape measure.

here is a page from Dlask and the gun is listed as "26.75" NON Restricted"

Overall length can be shorter than 26" if it came from the factory that way, and it is not a handgun. ie: mares leg

Or is made with bolt together "factory" parts. ie. T/C Contender carbine with 10" factory barrel and short factory forend, 23", non-restricted.

So to be safe we really need…

Barrel length at least 470 mm (18.5”)
Minimum length of 660 mm (26”)

But we can push the envelope in specific conditions.

So to be safe we really need…

Barrel length at least 470 mm (18.5”) Does your rimfire gun shoot centre-fire ammunition? If not then your barrel can be any length as long as anything under 18" was "factory" made.
Minimum length of 660 mm (26”) If it's shorter than 660mm did it get that way by by folding, telescoping or otherwise? If not it's not resricted, think, as mentioned earlier, of the mare's leg guns and why they are NR. Not because they're cute! It's because they don't fit the definition of R and as such are NR.

But we can push the envelope in specific conditions.

Colored stuff to think about
