What is with SF types and 1911's?

the only sf types I see using 1911's are on the tv show, "the unit". but then again, I don't get out much. ;)

X2

I think a lot of the opinion here is based on TV. Just because all the SOF units in the movies use 1911s, doesn't mean they really do!
Obviously, there are a number of groups/units in the public eye, who DO use 1911s. MARSOC of course, and probably the most obvious, LAPD. Kimber uses them in their ads. HOWEVER, the US is the only country who's SOF are using 1911s. For that matter, the only country who uses the .45ACP!
Canada; 9mm. UK; 9MM. Australia, Poland, Germany, Russia (kind of), all use 9mm. SO, the reason it may seem that "all SOF groups" are switching back to the 1911, is because the US is the only one in the news.
I'm not going to say it's because one pistol is better than another, because it's all personal preference. In my opinion, I wouldn't take a Glock anywhere other than the range. I can keyhole rds at 15m with my sig, with my glock, I never know where I'm going to hit, and it's NEW! I've seen a MARSOC shooter who was so good with his 1911, that I'm pretty sure he was a semi-pro sport shooter!
(By the way, although MARSOC reportadly has a contract with Kimber, all of their guns that I've seen, were old refurb springfields.)
The only gun that I would NOT take over a Glock, is the Browning Hi Power. I know a lot of guys from the CF like the gun, because they're familiar with it. I don't. I'm just as "familiar" with it as any other guy in the infantry (CF), Shot it, carried it, put it down, and never looked back. :p
I was surprised to read that the US Army SF (green Beret's) have switched to 1911s. The only green Beret's I've seen have been wearing Berettas.

LASTLY, before I sign off, this thread is 99% opinion, 1% information, so I hope I didn't offend anyone. ;)

Semper gumbi!

Actually, the 1911 seems to be popular outside of North America.

To my friends at STI,
I’m am extremely happy to announce, that I just received my order of STI Tacticals ordered by the
Danish Army for our Special Forces.
I was told, that this order is the biggest in the history of STI so far, and I am proud and honored to be
part of STI history along with all of you.
I really appreciate the way you by joined effort, with hard work, dedication and lots of hours, made the
hopeless deadline quoted us by the Danish Army. I’m sure you at one point or another shared my doubts
of getting all 180 Tacticals and alternate tops done in time for shipping and I’m positive you shared my
excitement, when the shipment left your dock in Georgetown last week.
I’m delivering the guns to the Army purchasing department on Friday December 22. as scheduled, and
the guns are then issued our Special Forces in the fi rst week of January.
Our Special Forces are fi ghting along side of American troups as part of the coalition in Afghanistan and
Iraq, and I’m proud that we together have brought our troops a reliable, accurate and safe side arm to
help keep them safe in the hostile part of the world, in which they operate.
This order was a milestone for TopGuns, and I feel more privileged and proud than ever before to be a
part of the STI family, and to represent your interests in the Scandinavian market.
I’m sure this is just a small step in our future path together!
I’ll close for now wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Kind regards

I don't understand what all the fuss is about. The simple reason you see 1911's in various elite groups is because the individuals have been given a choice to use what they are most comfortable with. Thats it, thats all, full stop.

How do you put a silencer on a 1911? Custom threaded barrel? Never seen it...I suppose that doesn't mean much though....

silenced models of the Ak, nagant pistol ,tokerov ,ruger .22, pistol and 1022, m4 grease gun and PPK have seen military service but you don't see them everyday either.
