Anyone have any stories that made them switch cartridges. Did you switch up or down in size?

mines mostly been switching between different rifles to get that more comfier or suitable one, so the chamberings change a bit from that as its not always easy to find the 'right' one in the same cartridge that you may be using, typically, in aus , anyway.

im now in the 30-06 and 303 catorgory... same same though

For me? No such thing, I have a few favourites. But too many choices and none I dislike, lots of contemplation every time the safe opens :) However if I need a shot of luck it’s .358 Win for bear and 7mm Mag for everything else.

7-08 & 30-06 are the only two I own. 30-06 goes out more.

Thinking about buying a .270 and ditching the other two. Time will tell.

I switch between 3?different Kimbers d pending what I'm doing I use a hunter in 30-06 or a Montana in 30-06 or I use a Mountain Ascent in 380 AI. That's s what happens mostly in my world occasionally I use an 1895 in 30-06 or a 21 H in 8x 57

It would be cool to hear people's reason for their cartridge choice. Specific favorite game you hunt, or experiences that directed your selection.

I had hunted with a 30-30 most of my hunting life. When I moved to where I am now, I wanted a little more range with as little recoil as possible. I ended up with my first 7mm-08. That first year I dropped a bull moose at 367yds. That cemented my love for the 7mm-08. It has killed everything I’ve shot at with no fuss.

Good to hear! Where did you hunt before moving to Windberta?

If I could answer this question I’d likely own just one rifle.
Ain’t happening but if it was it would be a 338 Win Mag.
Not exactly perfect for everything but lacks for none.

I grew up in BC in the Burns Lake/Smithers area before moving west of Calgary. I hunted there along the forestry trunk road. I now live in northern Alberta where I am in the trees one minute and crop fields the next. The funny part is all but 3 of the animals I’ve shot up here have been Shot under 100 yards.

interesting groupings

well for me its more open country and 300WM for Moose season and if no moose tags then the 25-06 is the go to for deer.

selection I have a few to choose from and have recently added a 325WSM and 338WM to the line up.

on a longer trip I pack a backup rifle and that normally is the 7mmRM

I have 2 go to rifles, one in 6.5 manbun, one in 308 win, both kill just fine. At the distances that I tend to take game both are way overkill. I would almost be equally served by a slingshot, haha.

Go to for everything, stainless, synthetic, lightweight rifle is in 7mm08.

I have lots of other rifles, but none that are "go to" for any situation. Mainly because of nice blue and walnut.

.30-06, I’ve never carried anything else in the bush. Has worked on moose, bear and deer equally well.

Though these 6.5 PRC reviews and stories I keep reading are tempting...

Small world, born and raised, and still in Burns lk lol.

The rifle I grab 99% of the time, is either my grandmothers custom pre 64 .375 h&h, or my grandfathers mannlicher chambered in 9.5x57 (.375 nitro express). Both are inherited rifles, their not finished being used yet ;).
