What is your current m14 ammo choice?

7.62x51 Steel Cased Norinco Copper Washed, great plinking ammo in my M14.

Springfield Super Match, only shooting reloaded ammo so far, LC M852 brass, Win WLR primers and some combo of 4895 and a 175 SMK.

For slow fire, single load ammo I headspace a little closer for the sake of brass life, vs rapid fire ammo that will be magazine fed.

My own reloads:

IVI brass, CCI BR2 primers, 155 gr Amax, 30.0gr of IMR4895.

Very little recoil, cycles the action reliably, good results at 100 yds.

Haven't tried it yet at longer ranges.

30 or 40 grains? 30's like 10 grains under starting

I'm saving all my xm80 brass for some uniform reloads. I'm not going to waste my lapua brass on a gun that will never shoot accurately enough to appreciate it. I have a ton of Winchester brass which I have sorted by weight, and man does it ever vary in weight, and use that currently for reloads for my M14S. I also have a lot of IVI brass, which was murder to resize the first time. Plus I seem to recall the primer pockets needed the crimp removed. A lot work.

30 grains. I got this from Ganderite, who suggested I try from 25 to 30 grains. I did, and found my best results at 30gr.

There are threads here on CGN and elsewhere about using H4895 for these loads: 60% of the max load for the chosen bullet, but you can also find many who have used IMR4895 instead of H4895, even though Hodgdon says you should only use H4895 for these reduced loads.

It is a lot of work. And yes, the pockets needed the crimp removed and deepened so the primers sat below flush. Small wonder then that I'm somewhat obsessed with retrieving every single bit of my brass.

With the IVI brass I needed to use more Dillon spray lube than I would for a bolt action to make it even possible to re-size them, and then I followed up with a small base die to get them down to where they'd pass the Lyman case gauge.

Straight Shooters / Western Metal makes a 168gr BTHP .308 for $1.30/rd that works really will in my M1A NM
