What do you go hunting in? I've been thinking about getting a ford excursion for its large size and potential sleeping abilities with the rear seats taken out.

Not sure I wanna get a camper... that would require me potentially using it for family vacations (fawk that) Maybe a pick-up truck with camper in the bed?

Would mainly be for me and the father in-law as nobody else really hunts that we know..

edit: something that could also be used as a daily drive would be helpful.. my jeep is dying :(

A bunch of people are giong to post pics of their boots. I know. It's lame. Get a truck with a capmer. Do your research before you decide on a truck model and brand. I have an 04 SD and a 20 foot camper, but I never get out without a few kids there. I'm geussing your kids are young. Soon enough you will want to take them.

We've gone through this a few times. Vehicle that you can take the seats out of to sleep? Too small and uncomfortable. Worse to camp out of than in a tent in the bush.
Bottom line. We decided on a smaller size, older, RV trailer. Ours was 16 feet, but for two could be more like 12 feet. I went hunting on some pretty long trips with a friend who pulled a 12 ft. trailer behind his Bronco. Propane stove, sink in it, a cupboard and table that came down to make up the bed. Actually, this one had up and down bunks, each one big enough for a sleeping bag. A trailer this size is more comfortable to live in than a camper that fits in a pick up trailer. I am well aquainted with that route, also.
A trailer that fits the bill is also very reasonable to get on the used market. If you have a place to park it, it just sits there until you are ready to load it up and hook onto it.

My current work/ hunting truck is a full sized extended cab, longbox, 4x4 pickup with a highrise cap on it. It hauls tools and material for work and gets me into the privately maintained (poorly maintained) cottage roads up here. Clear out the tools and throw a couple lounge chairs in the bed and coolers etc in the back seat and its a great camping/hunting machine. It might not be the most practical solution for everybody, but I need it for my work anyway, so its ideal for me.

yep =)

I was thinking a smaller rv.. but without 4x4 where we go it would be useless.. but it sucks having to drive back to friends/hotel after being out all day only to have to drive back out in the morning.

I bought a mid sized truck, an 08 dakota quad cab 4x4. Works great for me, I bought one of those box tents for it. It just me and my son that go out, so this is more than what we need.

i use this. and love it! 40mpg 4x4 , soon to have a sleeper made onto the back.

Get an older, solid-axle 3/4 on 4x4 pickup and an older 8 foot camper. You can get both for cheap and they'll do yeoman's service. All you need in an 8 foot camper and they have lots of benefits - no low rear overhang, handy storage between the camper and the box behind the wheelwells, and no toilet/shower combo which makes them unattractive to car-campers.

I hunt alone. I have a Jeep Cherokee. It serves me well enough as a daily driver, and when I go hunting I remove the rear seat bench and fold down the rear seat back to make a nice flat cargo space. It's two inches short of long enough to sleep comfortably in because I'm 6'2", but I can carry a tent or a tarp for shelter and enough other gear.

But I miss my old (1980) regular cab half ton with its eight-foot box and cap. That space was what I call luxury.

I used to be a full sized truck guy, but I switched to this
09 Ford Ranger Sport 4x4 and love it. Quad (not shown) fits under the canoe with the wood stove and wall tent. I have found when it comes to tucks, Bigger isn't necessarily better

I have a Z71 but whatever I drive I like my 18-foot travel trailer (old but good) because unlike an over-the-cab camper I can set it down in about 2 minutes as base camp and go into the hard country with an unencumbered 4x4. Works for me! If I have to go "way back in" and it is too tough to drive back out every day then I take in my shack tent. With the trailer, my quad rides in the back of the Z71 and I can carry the canoe on the truck as well.

91 f250 (wish it was a one ton for ease of front end maintenance). 5 spd, 7.3L diesel with an ats turbo on it, canopy to sleep under, trailer behind with a SOA samurai on 33's or an 82 Toyota flatdecked with 36's. Both wheelin/hunting rigs are locked front and rear and have winches and extensive recovery gear.
