For quantity it's a toss up between .45 Long Colt & .455 Colt/Eley. Having said that, .44 S&W Special is starting to burn up that trail.

The longer I've been playing this game however, the more respect I've gained for a .38 Special with 200gr cast boooolits @ 900'/sec... The equivilant of the old Winchester "super police" loading.... Think about it.

The caliber I've shot the most over the last 10 years? Definately .45 Colt.

There is just something comforting about a 255gr .452-.454 SWC @ 850'/sec.

357 Mag/38 Special Chambering

My favourite revolvers are in both 357 and 38 Special. IF I could have only one revolver it would be in this double chambering. The revolver would be either a Colt Python or a S&W N frame in a 4 or 5"brl.'
Essentially you can do "anything you have to do or want to do" with a revolver in this double chambering. The .357 accepts 38 Specials which you can buy as reloads for $170.00 a 1000. You cant reload them for that if you factor in your time along with the components. There are innumberable loads from target to hunting. In a long 6' or 8&3/4 " brl the 357 can be hotted up to give "pocket rifle" hitting power. It isnt a good a stopper as a 44 Mag or a 45 Colt but IF I had a dollar for every time I have seen a 44mag for sale that had only had ONE book of loads fired through it I could buy several shares of COS.UN at $119 a share.
The list is MIA the 45 Auto eh! Thats an oversight here as my favourite revolver load tied with 38 Special is the 45 Auto. With moonclips it is really a better proposition than the 357 and that 230 grain bullet gets the job done. As for the other mag calibres I think they all suffer from "recoilitis". Try shooting a PPC Match with one eh! Is 44 Special in the list? Thats a good pick for the 44 mag revolver as well and makes recoil manageable. I really like all of them but the cost of ammunition makes the difference. You have to practice and 38 Special or 45 Auto makes that possible.
