What is your favorite red rifle to bubba?

Median individual income is $27,600 in Canada making $800 considerably more than half a week's wages. Lets presume that half a weeks wages was $30 in 1965 for median individual income, in that case the $30 firearm is more affordable.

A $30 firearm in 1970 equates to $180 today or so. The price of a refurbished SKS.. no surprise.

How many tradesmen do you know that make $27,600 per year? We both know city bus drivers, cops, prison guards etc that make more than 100 grand per year.

The collector value of any object is determined by the worth of two individuals wanting the same object at the same time. The question now becomes, what is the object truly worth. Alone in the woods and starving, the value of a 100 karat diamond is worthless compared to the value of a carrot.

If you and the rest of the purist collectors didn't want to pay 800 dollars for a 98 mauser then they would sell for 30 bucks so someone could by carrots.

Your argument reminds me of the local politician who bragged about the solar panel farms going up all over the province. This farm will now produce enough power to light 2,000 homes........problem is we don't need lights during daylight hours.....it used to feed a hundred families.

Enjoyed your views,

Actually, mausers/enfields/ross are cheaper now then they ever were if you consider the buying power of a 2015 dollar to the buying power of days gone by dollars.

Sure they are its just that now we pay good money for crap when years ago they had their pick of unissued examples that soon met the sawzall.

+1 on modding an sks or mosin. Yes, you are destroying its value but there are so many out there right now that it doesn't really matter. I modded the crap out of my first sks then sold it, did the same with my second, and third, but my fourth I left alone (other than a trigger job) to appreciate its original looks and historic value. That's how I learned how the sks works inside and out and had fun while doing it. Modded my mosin a bit too with a scope and bent bolt, trigger job. Looks great and gave me a good learning tool. It all depends what you want out of your gun and whether you're a collector or a modder. I also have a vz58 I modded. That's how I learn.

canuck94 do you have rocks in your head, point me to one bus driver, prison guard, and other than a very high ranking police officer that makes 100k. That was a good laugh for me. Now everyone lets get back to what the guy originally came her for. Here is my 53 All matching number Izzy that I had hot blued, through a william peep site combo, did a trigger job on it and threw on a much more comfortable stock. I love playing around with sks's because they are so cheap, and if you get a good one they shoot a reasonable drop for what they are. But I do like the overall feel of both my VZ's. There is a lot of aftermarket things you can do to both that still make them look great.

Before you go off shooting from the hip at someone you should be looking up the sunshine list for the province of Ontario and you will be introduced to reality.

This part of your post I have to agree with fully.

I cut down the barrel on my mosin and bored out a No4 Lee Enfield front sight base. Since only option other then getting the barrel turned down for a front sight. I need to work on the blade height because my 500m is my 100Y zero.

A guy on youtube convinced me to leave my mosin alone.

I was watching mosin youtube videos and a guy explained why not to mess with the old rifles. He made a few good points that turned the light bulb on.
Just use iron sites a red dot will do nothing for a rifle
Most mosins are under a 200m range anyway unless you are really good.
All the mods you do like a timney trigger, aftermarket stock, scope mount. scope, muzzle brake, or bolting on that ugly pistol grip will help a little but not be able to compete with a new rifle around the same price of the mosin with all the mods added up.
But the most important thing about leaving it alone you get the true feel of what that rifle was like during WW2, and how it felt to deal with the sloppy trigger and nasty kick that rifle has.

Why buy an old red rifle or milsurp to make it modern. I can see trying to make it better to shoot or the feeling you have when you can improve a rifle with your own imput.

All I can say is I felt like I went to church and had an awakening. But I am still going to leave that metal vented handguard and 30 round magazine on my sks pinned to 5 of course.

On the plus side my money is still sitting on top of the gun safe.
