What is your favorite wildcat caliber?

Gatehouse, I have a 375/338 and have worked up lotsa loads for it. Pretty much an H+H on a reg. action. Mine's a mauser, I got it on here (CGN) a few years ago. Also have a twin to it in 416 Taylor.
I also have Gibbs in 240-257-284 -30 -8mm. and a 35 Brown Whelen which is same as Gibbs. Also have a 35/284 35/404Imp.,358STA, 22Cheetah,300H+H IMP.,6-284, 8/06,
My current project is a 35/416 Rigby which is essentially a 378Wby necked down without the double radius shoulder and belt.My first was a 240 Gibbs. That barrel didn't make a full summer. Al made the next 2 at the same time, and turned the shot out one into a 30 Gibbs, and on it goes. I see no reason to own factory cart. if you handload anyway, but too each his own. Mark

I shoot a 223 AI, 7-08 AI, and 280 AI

My 280AI is 8.5lbs scoped.... my sendero rifle.

My 7-08AI is 6lbs scoped.... my mountian rifle.

If I had to choose one of the two.... I couldn't..... that is why I built both (grin).

Welcome to the board

What's my favorite wildcat ??? .358 STA, it crushes everything in it's way.:D but .224 Clarke & 6-284 run very close second and third. I also have a .30 Gibbs that I like alot but have never had a chance to kill anything with it yet.:( .17/222mag kick's ass on gopher's :D

Soon my .20 Tac should be ready..............I can hardly wait for April.:)

I have just started the Improved game, entered with a 280AI.Forming brass right now, looking forward to the load development.RB

Some day I will have a 270-308, It would be my wildcat of choice. You don,t here about it at all. I like any and all wildcats based on the 308 cartridge.

Not many made for a very good reason.... why spend all that money for a reamer and special dies for a cartridge that has a poorer selection of bullets just to have a bullet 7 thousands of an inch smaller than a 7mm-08. ?

I have used the following: .219 Wasp, .17 Ackley Hornet, .17 Pee Wee and
recently picked up a 6 x 45 (.223 necked up to 6mm) in a Ruger mini14 custom. It should be fun for coyotes

Now here is a cartridge that has always intrigued me. I'm gonna have one built one day. Just cuz. Not on a mini14, but a bolt gun.

Let us know how it goes when you play with it.

Gun Tech, I want an all purpose rifle and 270 is the biggest caliber we can use here in Southern Ontario, I know the 7mm is virtually the same and the 260 will also do the same thing as will my 257. The 270-308 is actually older than the 7-08 as winchester was testing it back when the 243 and 358 were born. If you look at all the cartridges out there do we really need wildcats.
It's just my opinion.

If you just gotta to build a 270/308, you may as well got to the improved version, but why bother with the standard 270Win and the (choke, choke) 270WSM already out there.

The 270/308Imp offers no advantage over the other two 270, except costing alot more.

If I was hunting in S.Ontario again, I would be using a .264Mag or a 270Weatherby if I just had to have lots off velocity.

358 How do you like your 8mm Gibbs I have one chambered now and have to finish the stock and then I am going to start working some loads up for it. How does it shoot and can you give me some where to start for loads with 200gr bullets?
Thanks for all of the interesting posts fellas I like to hear about the wildcat calibers.

Supercub.
If I were interested in any of the improved version which I not, I would go with the 270 Redding. As far as the 270 win, I have one and it does work very well. I do not think that the wsm versions are worth the expense. Getting back to the original question. What is your favorite wildcat caliber?
My answer to that would be the 270-308. That,s my opinion.

I disagree..........270's of any size are awsome!:)

Man you have some weird regulations in the east...

That explains why you would want a .270 bullet..... now it is just the big extra cost of making and loading for a 270-308 over a standard .270 Winchester.

If you want to do that you don't have to justify it to anyone. That's what big boys toys are all about.

I didn't say anything about awesome or knock the performance in any way... BUT.. I don't understand how a bullet .007" smaller in diameter and at less velocity can be so awesome over the 7mm bullet. And yes, I said less velocity.. it is a fact as you neck cartridges down with all else being equal, you lose velocity. Not much in the example of a .270 and a 7mm bullet, but it shows up more with bigger differences in diameter.

I simply commented that not many 270-308's are made and gave the reasons why.....

If you want to make any wildcat that is perfectly fine with me, it is your money...... but if you are making one and professing how practical and how much better it is, you may get a lot of differing opinions on that.

300 weatherby offers optimum FPS in 30 cal, combined with optimum barrel life....And it is a wildcat

This is a joke, right?

I would think a .25WSSM necked up to 7mm in a petite rifle would be interesting. It would be very trim, maybe a 20 or 21" barrel, and I guess it would have similar performance to a 7x57, which is just fine for most situations.
