What is your favourite hunting caliber and

my favourite caliber is one where a .25 sd, .5 bc, or higher, bullet can be launched somewhere south of 15 ft/lbs recoil energy and maintain 1800 fps impact to about 500 yards, so it really depends on the rifle choice but it does narrow the calibers down to a couple that I like, but it's not the caliber that got me to choose it, it was everything but the caliber that got me to choose it, caliber is just a byproduct

That's an interesting analysis of the factors that determine our cartridge choices. The 6.5x55 with good 140-gr. bullets--(SD > .25; BC >= .5) at anything over 2800 mv (easily attainable) and recoil energy well below 15 ft.-lbs. in a light-to-medium weight rifle--meets all your criteria.

What is your favourite hunting caliber for medium to large North American game up to 500 meters and why is it 30.06?

well it sure ain't the 30-06
for caliber the .308 is nice but diff cartrdiges will kick ace over the 06 ( 300 wsm )
Best of the best
.284 in a variety of cartridges , flat, accurate , SD, and hits hard with big hole

I would say 6.5 but then I would be lying

well you got it down to one of my two favourite 'calibers' but I never took it further to the cartridge selection, tried to keep thread on track, more factors are required to determine that, from factory availability on the ammo to start, future longevity, then platforms and support for the type of rifle I have in mind etc....but you've made a solid reduction for a reloader no doubt it hits all the right buttons and has longevity already supporting it and it's not going anywhere looking forward either, so in cartridges with better factory support I'd be down to choosing between .270 win, 6.5 CM and 6.5 Grendel, only one I haven't tried of the 3 is the manbun, I know how the other 2 work so would be nothing but pleasant surprises I'm sure and very close to your proven selection, have had multiple of each on 7mm and .30 cal and .30 by far my least favourite, 7mm was just meh for me also, never did try a .25, fond of 6mm but not as fond as 6.5 and 6.8 ;)

Right now, 6.5 CM or 6.5x55 in very close second (pretty much interchangable)

Doing all that needs doing, efficiently, with a minimum of drama.

Take big game out and make it just deer? 300 BLK and 7.62x39.

The 308 is great, but the 30-06 is no good because the 300 WSM is faster. Brilliant.

Lol is all you can do at that theory i suppose.

I have both the 308 & 30-06, even had a 300WSM in the fold at one point. I’m confident with all three at the previously discussed ranges and just grab whichever one for the day and run with it know it’s/they are all quite capable.

Would love to see anything tell the difference.

So.. because some doesnt hunt what you do, they’re wrong?

See above comment.. and ya most of us were puzzled weeks ago with some of his threads and replies on them.

Ah yes. Elk are not moose nor any other big game. They're magic. They can tell if a bullet is from a 308 Win at typical ranges and laugh it off when it reaches heart/lungs. Everyone who actually hunts them knows that.

A 30-06 or better still a 300 magnum of some sort anchors them though, even when misplaced apparently. Kryptonite.
