If it's a last ditch weapon for the apocalypse, it needs to be simple and easy to maintain, require no spare parts that can't be made with a hand file and a scrap of steel and be reliable.
Probably I'd choose an SMLE or an SKS, or if available, a milled AK47. No optics as they break or get dirty.
A smart person would select a rifle over a shotgun. Although you're right, the animal/target in question won't know the difference. What makes the difference is whether or not the projectile reaches its intended target.. A rifle is a far better option.

That does NOT meet my definition of "super reliable".
Maybe it is time to buy an AR....an AR that works! I am sure not what kind of Combat you are thinking, but if you are thinking about zombies, a shield and a gladius probably work better than a bayonet on a steel pipe!
If you thinking about beating the crap out of your rifle, maybe you should beat the crap out of a shovel instead of a firearm.
I assume he's talking about the restricted having a chrome lined bore, which the non-restricted don't have (I think).
I am surprised that more people have not chosen the AK47. Lots of ammo available everywhere. I am sure I have 10 000 rounds right handy and if you had to find anything it would be the easiest after the 22 long rifle.
PS90 with a full 50 round mag and a few extra. Maybe a drum for the ak. Maybe one of my galils. But I would lean towards the 7.62x39 as I am sure it would be easier to find.
I guess an ak47, galil in 5.56x45, ps90, and a glock 18. the 3 should be able to find ammo as you travel or scour the area for food and fuel.
I think it would also depend on how good of a hunter you are. If you're good enough you don't have to shoot animals from 100+ yards.
As mentioned, the AK is not available in Canada. In any event, the VZ/CZ rifles are far superior to the AK and are available in Canada.
Both my M1 Garands! No question about htat
Well, now there are those of us among you who do have AKs [12.5].
the VZ/CZ might have better workmenship, but don't think its a "far superior" rifle.
I forgot about those who were into the "naughty" rifles before the gov't knew about them. The VZ is definitely a better rifle than the AK, not that I would complain if I had an AK, but it wouldn't be my 7.62x39 go to gun.
Milled receiver
over 1 pound lighter
short stroke gas system
striker fired
properly placed safety
last round hold open
What's not superior about the VZ over an AK?
