For deer, elk and moose, I use a Rem 700 30.06 topped with a bushnell 3-9. I will shoot to close to 300 yards, but only with a solid rest. If no rest, no shot. Rarely will I shoot offhand and the target must be under 50 yards. I will always look for a rest. I am now packing shooting sticks, but I haven't had a chance to try them out on game yet. On the farm, I generally use a Parker Hale in .270 for coyotes. I have tried shots to 400 but not with much success. This gun only carries a fixed 4 power scope. I have been shooting it lots lately and hope to improve my kill ratio as a result.

Small game aka varmints come down to one factor. IF the bullet hits the animal, will it die. Yes, then I will take on the wind, running animals, whatever. So long as the shot is safe.
Big game depends on a number of factors. Rest availability, animal location where it pertains to availablility of follow up shot if required. Wind, of course. Animals disposition, moving, alert, preoccupied with a female....
Orientation of animal and presentation of vitals.
.257 Wby to 500m is the right circumstances presented themselves
.30-06 - 400m max if all things lined up
6mm - 250m on deer
.30-30 - 150m yards, deer, elk, moose, black bear
.375 - Same as .30-06.
.22LR - 100m
Compound Bow - 40m
I do practice to these distances and know where the bullets land.
 
Rem. 7600 in 30.06. Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40. Paper punched @600yrds, but I'd never get anywhere close to that range where I hunt. Longest I've done was about 300yrds (squatting) in wind and took a long track to find it! Usually no more than 200yrds.

.50 cal side hammer muzzleloader, shooting round ball, open sights, no more than 100yrds
 
For heavy slow moving bullets eg 45-70 150 - 200 yards max I practice a lot at the 210 meter gong at the range.

I try to keep all other higher velocity/flatter shooting rounds/shots to 300 yards max on big game though.

In a hunting situation I have never had a need to risk a big game animal by extending my range beyond 300 yards.

Didn't say I couldn't do it said never had a need too.

Now with coyotes or wolves depending on the rifle eg 22-250 I'd go 500 yards.
 
I much prefer shots inside 300 yards to those beyond 300. Tha being said, I practice a lot at longer ranges, and depending on the rifle I'm packing, will take a shot out to 500 or a bit further if conditions are ideal. I have shot several moose and elk in the 425-475 range with my 7mm STW and my 308 Norma mag or 30-338. My longest shot on a muley was a very long poke in open country with the assistance of a rangefinder and a rest as steady as any bench, and no wind. That was with a 270 Winchester and the 140 Accubond, which is a ½moa shooter in my rifle. Offhand, I limit my shots to 150 or so, and moving animals over 200 yards always get a bye. I do not like chasing wounded game. Regards, Eagleye.
 
I am good to 300 yards with my 300 wby under any condition.

I would not shoot any farther than that unless i had perfect conditions a good range finder and a ballistic card specific for that load along with the optics to dial it in.
 
243 winm70 or my 6mm remmy 788 for deer out to 250 yds
25-06 ruger m77 for deer out to 300, for elk a bit closer.
Moose\Elk 338 federal out to 300
But practice helps.
 
Moose and deer: Savage 99 in 375 Winchester topped with a Redfield 3-9X.

Also taking along my Savage 99R in 358 Win this year topped with a Redfield 2-7X as my back up rifle.

It was actually a blacktail, which have smaller bodies and antlers than mule deer.

10" probably sounds right, but I've never measured it.:)

The 180gr TSX went end to end on the deer and exited, and dropped it rigth there. You can see where it exited and hit the rear leg.

Sometimes you really scare me man.......

Now I'm gonna have this image of you and that deer burned into my memory all night long and I'm gonna have to turn down the wife on a Sunday night romp cause of you........thanks alot, who needs enemies with buddies like you.
