I have 3,

One is stock, laminate with nice mag pin job.... never gets shot.
Another is in a tapco stock, tapco mags, magpul butt stock, vented gas tube, feels great, works great.... hardly gets shot
The third is stock, plain wood with metal pro-mag magazine. It lives in my iltis or on the front rack of the quad. It's blown up more jars of tanerite than all three guns combined are worth, shot gophers, squirrels, coyotes, skunks, etc. been completely submerged in mud, muddy water, snow, spilled beer... its exceptionally tough. I love it. Oh yeah, it's cleaning solution is a pressure washer and WD40...

I don't own one anymore.
But when I did it was the cheapest, toughest, most reliable, cheapest to feed rifle I ever laid eyes on.
One of the all time best firearms ever made in terms of simplicity, ruggedness, reliability.
It's only a "bad rifle" to people who measure the value of a firearm solely with a set of calipers on a paper target.

Closest thing to the AK-47, we can legally shoot. And with a little tactical engineering, we can even make it look pretty darn close to one.

The SKS is nicer in a lot of ways. I was up in Canada for the holidays playing with a Russian and Chinese SKS and they are pretty solid. I miss mine from when I lived in Canada but they are too expensive here.

Took back a souvenir to put on my AK (Chinese SKS sling).

Ayeeeeeeeee

haha thats awesome.

Cheap 7.62x39 surplus will be still be around for a long, long time.

I don't own one. I don't feel any attraction to them, although I did see one here a while back that I thought actually looked great.

Anyway, my theory is that once all the cheap surplus ammo runs out, they'll be a dime a dozen in the EE.

Am I wrong?
Yea, ak47 runs x39 among many other firearms used today, so the availability will be there, maybe at a higher price as the older stuff gets used up. Even without cheap ammo, look at the enfield .303!! Price keeps slowly creeping up on those! Not a gun for everyone for sure, I like em! History, cheap, reliable etc, etc. Fun! They are fun. Let you r friends and yourself blast off a few mags in semi auto and not break the bank.

SKS, even with price increases, is still the cheapest semi-auto centrefire to buy. AND feed.

Price of ammo will go up, that I am certain, but I am nearly as certain that we will always have it. Circumstances would have to be pretty dire for surplus x39 not to be available. If world wide production ever stops it would be a sure sign of the apocalypse.

I love my SKS. It's an early all matching Chinese one with the spike Bayonete. I am accurately shooting out too 200 with my MagWedge Quick rail and a Weaver Kaspa 3-9×40 scope.
Over $550 in aftermarket parts but it's still just a $220 semi-auto that I honestly couldn't be happier with. Would like to put this back to original (I kept all the parts for it) and get a Russian one and then rebuild a tactical one so I get my original Chinese one back.

Bought one in the mid-80's when it was harder to find than an AK........Sold it in the mid-90's

Never looked back......will most likely never own another one.......I just do not grasp the concept that you "need" to have at least a SKS rifle....

I understand the fact that it's a great entry level firearm.....cheap....reliable.....cheap ammo etc etc

I'm into American muscle cars........ Why would I "need" a Honda Civic?

Honda Civic?

More like having a shovel in the shed, as you know it will always the job done and never let you down. But will that home cottage straw broom made by a craftsman get the same use, don't think so. :)

I like the rugged simplicity. They are crude but work like a damn. You don't have to own one but at the price why not. Never had any kind of problem with mine. I like to keep them stock but I have to admit it would be nice to throw a red dot on my shooter. Kind of defeats my simplicity mantra but oh well.
