I am currently looking for a 18,5 ' tactical barrel for my 870. I heard good things about the Vang comp compensated barrels.

Tacord.com offer them at 255$. I would like to try it before buying it but they're quite rare in Canada so I would like to ear about your experience on these barrels.

Cheers.

I love mine. The DEA claims are pretty close to what I am getting out of my 870. I had the vang comp system done to my 870, Full Vang Comp System, includes back boring barrel, long forcing cone and ports. I also had the sights upgraded. I paid $255 just for the mods (no barrel) from Tacords. So if you can get an barrel with mods for that price, do it. I will not publicly tell the world how much the full cost was because my wife might find out. If you are in the lower main land you can shoot the s**t out of mine if you want.

I just had my 18" barrel ported, and will have the back boring and longer forcing cone done in the future. The porting itself made a fairly large difference in controlling the shotgun. I noticed right away that the gun shot flatter, with noticable less barrel rise (I tested this using 2 3/4 00 buck magnum loads). The gun stayed very flat and I was able to get back on target right away, which led to faster follow up shots. Also for style points you get a cool looking smoke "V" shooting out of the top of the barrel!

I believe it will affect the recoil more than the grouping size. Of course if you are already sending it in, why not get it all? It's not that loud. My 12.5" non ported HP9 is much louder than my ported 870.

Back in 1995 I had one of the first ported barrels in Canada (was looking to license the process). At that time tactical 12 GA. loads were in their infancy and were only available from police supply houses.
Shooting factory 00 buck with the Vang Comp barrel made a huge difference. Didn't matter what factory load was used - the results where pretty good. I have a report somewhere that I wrote for a local municipal police department. From what I can remember standard factory 00 stayed on a 8.5 x 11 piece of paper out to 18 yards. Factory ammo and Vang Comp barrel resulted in the pellets staying on the sheet of paper out to 28 yards. With new (then) Federal 127 (or 132) 9 pellet tactical loads we were able to stay on paper out to 38 yards with 8 of the 9 pellets (With typical 1 pellet flyer). 8 pellet tactical loads were unavailable at that time. However, we ended up shooting a standard police silhouette target at 50 yards and were able to keep all 9 pellets on it. Fast forward to 2013 - most latest generation 8 & 9 pellet tactical loads will shoot decently out of most factory barrels. Would I spend the money again to have one of my newer barrels ported - probably not. However, I have never seen a report that shows the accuracy difference shooting tactical slugs between a Vang comp barrel and standard factory barrel. Might just have to get one done up so I can run another experiment.

From my limited experience Vang Comp barrels absolutely work as advertised.

However but I personally never took the plunge as I didn't want a really tight a pattern from every single load of buckshot, and over any kind of a distance even the tightest patterning buck load isn't going to anywhere near as tight and hard hitting as a slug.
