Yes, it's very pokey. Very clean though.
I gave up on Remington ammo years ago, their tooling is from WW2. I used UMC ammo a few times and it was completely abysmal. Their .22 rimfire is dire as well. Perhaps it has improved in recent years because you're the first person who has said anything nice about it that I can recall in ages.
Winchester USA used to also be terrible, but that seems to have improved. Federal American Eagle works, but it leaves a lot of crap in the gun. In fact so do Winchester USA and Remington UMC, but at least AE is consistently loaded.
One of my two favourite practice loads in 9mm is the Blazer 3509 load, 115 gr. TMJ. This is however quite warm and I've found over the years that guns wear out faster shooting it because (I think) the aluminum cases have less mass so more energy goes to the slide. But they do make a brass-cased Blazer load. For reasons beyond me the 124gr and 147gr loads never seem to be as accurate as the 115gr load.
My other favourite is the Geco 124gr FMJ load in the black and blue boxes, which is dirt cheap if you shop around for it. I haven't seen any in Canada yet though.
The advantage of the Geco load is that it is specifically designed for target shooting rather than target practice. It is very consistent, reasonably accurate and loaded fairly mildly, but warm enough for any target shooting sport. The idea was to make minor PF out of a 100mm barrel and it does that.
The only other 9mm loads I can think of made by major makers that are intended for actual competition use are the really expensive Federal and Winchester TCM loads. In fairness they are more accurate than the Geco ammo but the Geco is better than any of the other inexpensive loads.
The Samson 115gr FMJ load is pretty good too, but I haven't seen any here. Very popular in Europe though. I used to think it was a bit crap but it suddenly got a lot better.
I used to use tons and tons of PMC 115gr FMJ, simply because it was all I could get hold of at the time. It works. But I wouldn't say it bought tears of appreciation to my eyes. Slightly less accurate and very slightly cleaner burning than American Eagle.
