What kind of accuracy do you get from your .22LR?

Just as the title reads... I am curious to know what kind of accuracy people are getting with their 22's.

I have a Mark II FV and the best I have shot was 1 MOA at 100 yards (which was just luck) but I mainly see 1.5 MOA at that range with Thunderbolt ammo.

What are you shooting, at what distance, and what is your group size?

I think that 1" to 1.5" is pretty good if you are talking about decent sized shot groups and consistent. Not just best group out of dozens.

I find 50 yards is where good things happen for me with 22's. Like 0.5" groups. But at 100, not so good. I can't even be bothered to measure group sizes at that distance as they appear to be about the size of a softball. On the other hand, hits on gophers definately happen at 75 yards on a regular basis.

On the other hand, my 17hmr will shoot at 100 and produce 1" or less 5 shot groups. It is far more consistent. Both guns are CZ's.

22 is as potentially accurate as any other cartridge, it just fas a very low ballistic coefficient so it is more affected by wind. On a calm day I can get about two inch group at 100 yards and around a foot at 300 yards.

150 yards i get 1/2 inch groups using the ole reliable PMC ZAPPER 38 grain hollow point copper coated using my lakefield mossberg mark II with a weaver marksman 4x scope :sniper:. once i run out of the zappers i'll be on the hunt for a new shell with that kind of accuracy. so far i havent come close on any that i have tried.:( closest i have come with any other ammo is about 1 inch at 150 yards.
it really is too bad that pmc quit production of the .22 ammo.

I shoot a Savage MKII BSEV. I can get about 1/4" to 3/8" spread with some Lapua standard plus ammo at 50 yards off of a bipod. I have done very little to it other than adjust the accu-trigger. I plan on replacing the stock and trigger, and giving it a bedding job to see where that takes me. In the spring I am going to go further out, now that I have a good idea of the ammo it likes :)

Below are two five shot groups fired at fifty yards using SK Standard Plus in my Anschutz 1907 repeater. In perfect conditions, the majority of groups with this combination are in the 1/4" range at fifty yards, and under 3/4" at 100 yards.

Looks like I pissed my money away on an Anshutz prone gun and Eley ammo. I am going to have to wave the :bsFlag: on that claim because with groups like that you could win the Canadian Smallbore Championship.

I agree, one would have to try most of the more expensive "target ammo" to really see where you and your rifle stand, Eley, RWS, Lapua, etc. None of my guns could touch that 1/2" at 150yds with cheapo ammo and prolly not with match ammo.

No offence but I think you are full of sh!t!!!

Really, no offence intended.:jerkit:

I can consistently shoot sub moa at 50 yards with my 452 american 22.5"bbl sporter with quality ammo.the truely accurate 452 I sold :( a 16" bbl model american, was a consistent .25" shooter at 50yds with quality ammo and moa with a couple bulk brands.

Better ammo, smaller groups.

I shoot SK Rifle match from my Savage FV. 5rds into 5/8" on a calm day is possible.

1 1/2" at 200yds is possible too.

Jerry

Jerry, what ammo are you using - SK rifle is that a brand?

I am not familiar with good quality ammo for 22's. A lot of you guys have not posted what you are using, please fill me in!

My 1.5 moa groups get smaller the closer I come in from 100 yards but they are sure not sub moa, which is what I think a lot of you can obtain.

My 10/22 shoots minute of gopher, and its all the accuracy I need.......... :D I like American Eagle copper plated hollow points, they function well in my gun. I have not played around too much on the ammo side to see if it has a pet brand.

Well, I think I am wasting my time posting here, since a guy that can shoot ½" groups at 150 yards is so full of sh** that his eyes are brown.
As a matter of fact, ½" groups at 100 are plenty tough to attain with anything but the best rifles, best ammo and zero wind.
Nevertheless, some very fine groups are possible with the lowly 22LR
I have a Suhl 150 set up by Jim Williams for benchrest, and a 40X Remington that also shoot "lights out"
These shoot regularly under ¼" at 50 and ½ to 5/8" at 100
I have even shot a few groups at 200 that are under 1" [5-shot groups]
I'll post a couple and you can judge for yourselves.
Suhl @ 50M 10-shot groups, shot on a very calm morning. [Eley match EPS]

40X @ 50M also shot on a very calm day. [Eley match EPS]

My 452 American is a 3/8 to 1/2" rifle at 50 consistently with good ammo [RWS Rifle Match]
I also have a 541S and a Winchester 52 Sporter that will shoot nice small groups with ammo they like.
I have never seen ordinary run-of-the-mill ammo shoot consistent groups from any rifle, so am very sceptical about claims that say so.
Regards, Eagleye.

I get 1" groups at 50 Meters with my Target 10/22 (with lightened trigger) with CCI Mini Mags, and 333 Winchesters on a CALM day.

BEST i ever did at 50 yards was a 0.871" 5 shot with Eley Match OSP. She LOVES there but they are pricey and i am too cheap to feed her the good stuff... Walmart boxes will do :)

I know, not too great but i am improving hehe.

Eagleye, I have to say I truly enjoy your posts, and the pictures of your targets. Very few really understand what it takes to get 22's to shoot anywhere near what yours do on a regular basis.

The Zero on the 150 on the side of the suhl in the picture is what this suhl regularily shoots at 50 yards (5 shot group)

As you may have already found out...............this is a REAL BAD place to try and pass on B.S. There are many experienced shooters whom are not afraid to call you out on this one. You couldn't even see the targets for .22 with that setup, let alone shoot a decent group. Maybe you meant feet instead of yards..........big difference.:bangHead:

My setup is a Savage BV (accutrigger with a little work done), 6-24 Banner ( not bad, but not real good either), and reasonable rests (the Rock). With good ammo ( Federal Match 711b ) and a good day, I can expect groups from 1- 1 1/2" of five shots at 100 meters. That's a little more than 100 yards, but that is my usual range. At 50 yards, I have regularly shot 3/8" - 1/2" groups. In my experience, it takes MUCH better equipment to improve a little bit. You better be prepared for a very nice Anschutz, Suhl, etc rifle, very nice optics and even better ammo. Remember, that these groups are on a calm day (for both wind and shooter).

I have not tried any high velocity ammo that will group well in any of my guns past 100 meters. I tried Federal Match 719's, and they are no better than some of the bulk ammo. Go figure. Then again, I have no REAL high end .22 rifles either. Shot several, but I can't justify the extra cost for my shooting. I don't mind salivating on friend's guns !!;)

This is the best I have attained with my 10/22. This target was at 100 yards using bulk 333 ammo, perfect day (no wind). The rifle is a 31 year old Ruger 10/22 standard carbine with a Timney Trigger I got from Jerry at Mystic. The scope is a Burris FFII 3-9X40. There was 1 mulligan (flyer) that is hiding under the ruler at the 3.5" mark. Ever since this day, I have been lucky to hold 2" groups with the same rifle. That group measures about 1.18" with the 9 rounds.

I fixed it for you...

If you get 1.5" at 100 yards with your .22, you are doing very well. A few guys here like eagleye & mystic strive for perfection which take time, practice & MONEY. Getting a .22 to shoot sub MOA requires lots more than any .22 with a bit of skill. 3/4 of the guys suggesting sub MOA with some beater Lakefield semi or cooey are BS grinders. Don't buy into "internet sub MOA" achievements. It simply isn't true.

;)
