What kind of ammo to buy?

A friend of mine gave me his two rim fire rifles; one is a Mossberg 42 M-B, the other a Cooey 60. The stamps on both barrels say 22 S - L - LR. I got my PAL but ammo was never covered in details. What does the S - L - LR stands for and what would be the right, most common and economical ammo to buy? I will be using it for small game and target shooting.

.22 short, .22 long, and .22 long rifle. Long rifle is the cheapest/most common 500 rounds/ for around $20.
