What kind of ammo to buy?

A friend of mine gave me his two rim fire rifles; one is a Mossberg 42 M-B, the other a Cooey 60. The stamps on both barrels say 22 S - L - LR. I got my PAL but ammo was never covered in details. What does the S - L - LR stands for and what would be the right, most common and economical ammo to buy? I will be using it for small game and target shooting.

The gun is stamped....short...long...long rifle. the long rifle ammo is the most common and available in bulk. I personally use only Winchester 333/555 ammo. it works the best in all my rimfires and i do not wish to carry many different brands. I pest shoot mostly and only paper when sighting in a scope. The hollows really put them down.
 
Wasn't too long in the past that shorts were actually cheaper than Long Rifle ammo.

The Short, is pretty much the original .22 cal round.

Then they stretched it out, and that became the Long, same bullet as the short, slightly more powder (black at the time). IIRC there was an Extra Long, too.

The Long Rifle was developed for, go figure, rifles. It pretty much developed in THE .22 rimfire round.
Now, the Long is essentially the same performance as the Short, except without the ring of mung that the Shorts sometimes leave in the longer chamber. Not such a problem, with modern ammo and clean burning powders, but with lubricated bullets and not so clean burning powders, it could cause problems if you switched from Shorts to Longs or Long Rifles, without a wipe through the chamber with a brush.

Buy a couple boxes of different ammo and try them out to see what the guns seem to 'like'. Some guns don't feed some ammo well, others sometimes won't get consistent ignition. Try them before you buy a lot of anything, eh.
